Updates in acute graft‐versus‐host disease: From novel pathogenic mechanisms to emerging therapeutic targets

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
The graphical abstract provides a view on selected aspects of the pathogenesis, risk stratification and treatment of acute GVHD. Summary Acute graft‐versus‐host disease (aGVHD) remains a major complication following allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo‐HSCT), representing a leading cause of non‐relapse mortality (NRM) and ...

Analysis of plasma levels of α-defensins 1-3.

open access: yes, 2013
(A) Plasma levels of α-defensins 1-3 detected in the different groups of HIV-infected patients, elite controllers (ELITE; n = 3), viremic controllers (VC; n = 10), viremic non-controllers (VNC; n = 5) and patients receiving HAART (HAART; n = 9).

The fight of innate immunity and abnormal cannabinoids against Candida infection

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Candida species represent the most clinically significant fungal pathogens in humans, with invasive candidiasis carrying a mortality of 30%–40% in critically ill patients despite modern antifungal therapy. The innate immune system – through the coordinated and specific activities of neutrophils, macrophages, NK cells, mast cells and eosinophils ...

Regional variations in Paneth cell antimicrobial peptide expression along the mouse intestinal tract

open access: yesBMC Immunology, 2008
Background Enteric antimicrobial peptides secreted from Paneth cells, including α-defensins (in mice named cryptdins), are key effector molecules of innate immunity in the small intestine.

A molecular dynamics study of human defensins HBD-1 and HNP-3 in water

open access: yes, 2010
Mammalian defensins are crucial components of the innate immune system. They are characterized by three disulfide bridges and exhibit broad spectrum antibacterial activity. The spacing between the cysteines and disulfide connectivities in the two classes

RNA activation in insects: From emerging evidence to molecular applications

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Canonical RNA activation involves small RNAs interacting with promoter sequences, but there is also evidence of non‐canonical RNAa in eukaryotes. Emerging evidence suggests the presence of RNAa in insects. RNAa can be utilised as a tool for functional genomic studies in insects.

Increased α-defensins as a blood marker for schizophrenia susceptibility

open access: yes, 2008
Schizophrenia is a severe psychotic illness affecting 1% of the general population. There are no consistent pathological features, and the disorder is defined by a complex symptomatology, which overlaps with other psychiatric illnesses.

Hidradenitis suppurativa skin microbiome: In‐depth analysis and modulation by systemic therapies

open access: yesJournal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, EarlyView.
Hidradenitis suppurativa skin exhibits profound dysbiosis, characterized by the depletion of homeostatic commensals and expansion of anaerobic pathogens. Longitudinal evaluation reveals that while systemic antibiotics successfully reverse HS dysbiosis, biologics (adalimumab and secukinumab) fail to clear pathogens despite clinical healing.
