DataSheet_1_Circulating α-Klotho Levels in Relation to Cardiovascular Diseases: A Mendelian Randomization Study.docx

open access: yes, 2022
BackgroundSeveral studies have reported a protective role of circulating α-Klotho on cardiovascular diseases (CVD); however, the causality remains unclear.

Effect of Two Therapeutic Renal Diets on Hormonal and Regulatory Pathways Affecting Calcium Homeostasis in Cats With Early‐Stage Chronic Kidney Disease

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a known risk factor for hypercalcemia in cats. Phosphate‐restricted diets have also been implicated in causing hypercalcemia, in part because phosphate restriction increases the Ca:P ratio. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of two different therapeutic renal foods on ionized (iCa ...

L-shaped association of serum α-Klotho and frailty among the middle-aged and older adults: results from NHANES 2007–2016

open access: yesBMC Geriatrics, 2023
Background Frailty is common and not limited to older age group. Serum α-Klotho works as a biomarker of anti-aging effect. However, there is limited research about the relationship between them in middle-aged and older people and controversy still exists.

Periodontitis and Diabetes: Mechanistic Evidence of a Circular Relationship

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
This narrative review aimed to explore the underlying mechanisms that connect periodontitis to diabetes (and vice versa) and that influence disease susceptibility, progression and response to treatment. ABSTRACT The circular relationship between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus is one of the most established oral‐systemic links.

Seven days of warm‐water immersion enhances resting irisin and BDNF, but not klotho, in older men

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract We examined whether seven consecutive days of warm‐water immersion could elevate resting and exercise‐induced levels of brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), irisin and klotho in older adults. These biomarkers support cognitive and metabolic health, but their levels decline with age.

Neuroprotective roles of klotho: Molecular pathways and therapeutic implications for cognitive health in neurological and psychiatric diseases

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Klotho, a pleiotropic protein initially identified for its role in kidney function, has garnered significant attention for its neuroprotective properties in various neurodegenerative diseases. It regulates key processes, such as oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, synaptic plasticity and myelination, all crucial for maintaining neuronal ...

The role of serum α-Klotho levels in preventing hearing impairment among middle-aged and older adults: insights from a nationally representative sample

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience
BackgroundThe Klotho gene is implicated in suppressing aging phenotypes and influencing age-related diseases. Previous studies have delved into its connection with different diseases, yet the association between Klotho and hearing loss has rarely been ...

Born early, age fast: Consequences of premature birth on chronic disease and accelerated ageing

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend ELGANs are exposed to several postnatal pro‐oxidant stressors, including ambient and supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, infections, hyperalimentation, excessive glucocorticoids and intermittent hypoxia. Since endogenous antioxidant defences are underdeveloped, this imbalance promotes oxidative stress and inflammation ...
