Comprehensive update on the monkeypox outbreak

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Monkeypox (MPX) was first reported in 1970 in humans and outbreaks were restricted and highly localised to endemic regions of western and central Africa.

Genomic Characterization of the Historical Smallpox Vaccine Strain Wyeth Isolated from a 1971 Seed Vial

open access: yesViruses, 2022
The Wyeth strain of vaccinia virus (VACV) produced by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals was supposedly used to manufacture the old freeze-dried American smallpox vaccine, Dryvax, until its discontinuation in 2008.

ACAM2000 vaccine safety and immunogenicity considerations for smallpox and mpox

open access: yesExpert Review of Vaccines
Introduction Smallpox, eradicated globally in 1980, remains a major biodefense concern due to retained Variola virus stocks and the absence of population immunity following cessation of routine vaccination. Monkeypox virus (MPXV), a related orthopoxvirus,

Discovery and Structural Characterization of a Highly Protective Neutralizing Antibody Targeting the Mpox Virus A35R Protein

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 7, July 2026.
High‐affinity monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) targeting the MPXV EEV protein A35R were rapidly isolated using mRNA‐LNP vaccination and the Beacon single‐cell sorting Optofluidic platform, followed by functional profiling. One mAb, 17H1, potently neutralized authentic MPXV and conferred complete protection in vivo.

Monkeypox vaccine – Current status

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Medicine and Research, 2023
From a long time ago, there have been intermittent outbreaks of the zoonotic disease monkeypox (mpox) throughout Africa. The first case of human mpox was documented in 1970 in rural Congo. Mpox was classified as a Public Health Emergency of International

Monkeypox virus infection – Evolution, molecular biology, epidemiology, clinical features and management aspects

open access: yesCurrent Medicine Research and Practice, 2022
Monkeypox virus (MPXV) infection has lately emerged as a new public health problem across 100 countries. Surging cases of MPXV infection in non-endemic countries prompted the World Health Organization to declare it a public health emergency in July 2022.

Sex Differences in Response to Viral Vector Vaccines—Implications for Future Vaccine Design

open access: yesImmunological Reviews, Volume 338, Issue 1, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Vaccination represents one of the most impactful public health achievements, preventing 3.5 to 5 million deaths annually according to estimates of the World Health Organization. Yet, recent outbreaks of emerging and reemerging infectious diseases highlight the need for rapid and strategic vaccine development using vaccine platforms ...

An mRNA Vaccine Based on Antigens From Conserved Regions of Monkeypox Virus A35R and M1R With a Dimer‐Like Conformation Confers Protection Against Both Monkeypox Virus and Vaccinia Virus Infections in Mice

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 2, February 2026.
We developed four candidate mRNA vaccine antigens based on conserved sequences of MPXV A35R and M1R proteins. Our findings demonstrate that the MV2 vaccine possesses favorable immunogenicity and prophylactic potential against MPXV and VACV infections, positioning it as a promising clinical candidate for MPXV prevention.
