Investigation of the intrinsic mechanism of drug resistance in multiple myeloma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The focus of this thesis was to evaluate the mechanisms whereby myeloma cells develop intrinsic resistance with a focus on resistance in the context of bortezomib treatment.

Proteasome inhibitor, ixazomib prevents topoisomerase‐I degradation and reverses irinotecan resistance in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Ixazomib inhibits proteasome‐mediated degradation of topoisomerase I induced by irinotecan, thereby restoring drug sensitivity and promoting tumor cell death in colorectal cancer. Irinotecan, a topoisomerase I (topoI) inhibitor, is widely used for colorectal cancer, but resistance remains a major clinical challenge.

Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

Integrative transcriptomic analysis identifies emetine as a promising candidate for overcoming acquired resistance to ALK inhibitors in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology
Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK; also known as ALK tyrosine kinase receptor) inhibitors (ALKi) are effective in treating lung cancer patients with chromosomal rearrangement of ALK.

Drug Resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (DRSP) in the Maltese Islands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The DRSP prevalence rate for the Maltese Islands was investigated. Consecutive samples were obtained, both from adults and children, from September 2000 through April 2002.

Stimulator of interferon genes agonist augmented antitumor immunity of osimertinib in Egfr‐mutated lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining osimertinib with the STING agonist ADU‐S100 activates innate and adaptive immunity to overcome the non‐inflamed microenvironment of Egfr‐mutant lung cancer. This combination increases NK and CD8+ T‐cell infiltration, associated with activation of the STING‐IRF3 pathway and local immunogenic cell death.

Decline in rates of acquired multidrug-resistant tuberculosis after implementation of the directly observed therapy, short course (DOTS) and DOTS-Plus programmes in Taiwan

open access: yes, 2014
To investigate the impact of the directly observed therapy, short course (DOTS) and DOTS-Plus strategies on changes in resistance profiles among Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB).
