ACT Now or Later: The Economics of Malaria Resistance [PDF]

open access: yes
In the past, malaria control efforts in sub-Saharan Africa have relied on a combination of vector control and effective treatment using chloroquine. With increasing resistance to chloroquine, attention has now turned to alternative treatment strategies ...

Aquaporin 2 mutations in Trypanosoma brucei gambiense field isolates correlate with decreased susceptibility to pentamidine and melarsoprol [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The predominant mechanism of drug resistance in African trypanosomes is decreased drug uptake due to loss-of-function mutations in the genes for the transporters that mediate drug import. The role of transporters as determinants of drug susceptibility is

CCDC80 suppresses high‐grade serous ovarian cancer migration via negative regulation of B7‐H3

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PAX8 is a lineage‐specific master regulator of transcription in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) progression. We show for the first time that PAX8 facilitates proliferation and metastasis by repressing the cell autonomous tumor suppressor CCDC80 and inducing B7‐H3 expression.

Novel determinants of antibiotic resistance : identification of mutated loci in highly methicillin-resistant subpopulations of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

open access: yes, 2014
This work was supported by a grant from the U.S. Public Health Service 2 RO1 AI457838-14 and by grant UL1 TR000043-07S1 from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical and Translational ...

E2A selectively regulates TGF‐β–induced apoptosis in KRAS‐mutant non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Ability to induce apoptosis by TGF‐β is frequently lost in advanced lung adenocarcinoma despite intact TGF‐β signaling. We identify E2A as a mutant KRAS–dependent mediator of resistance to TGF‐β–induced apoptosis. TGF‐β induces E2A via SMAD3 in mutant KRAS cells, and E2A silencing restores apoptosis and enhances radiation response in cell lines ...

Acquired HIV-1 drug resistance to reverse transcriptase and protease inhibitors among people failing antiretroviral therapy in Cameroon and implications for future treatment options

open access: yesAIDS Research and Therapy
HIV-1 drug resistance (HIVDR) surveillance among individuals failing antiretroviral therapy (ART) is essential to selecting optimal ART-combinations for use in a public health approach in low-middle-income countries (LMICs) where routine HIVDR-testing ...

Profile of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Western Maharashtra

open access: yesJournal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, 2017
Context: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) strains have evolved mainly due to incomplete or improper treatment of TB patients and are one of the hurdles in controlling TB problem.

Inaccuracy of routine susceptibility tests for detection of erythromycin resistance of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli

open access: yes, 2009
In The Netherlands, both an increase in and regional differences in erythromycin resistance of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli have been reported.

CD47 promotes mitogen‐activated protein kinase and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition molecular programs to drive prometastatic phenotypes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Beyond its role in immune evasion, this study identified that CD47 drives tumor‐intrinsic signaling in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Transcriptomic profiling and functional studies revealed that CD47 regulates cell adhesion, migration, and metastasis through an ERK–EMT signaling axis.

Investigation of the role of LRP in multidrug resistance [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
There have been many reports linking the overexpression of the lung resistance-related protein (LRP) with cross-resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs.
