Barley HvBODYGUARD1 controls cuticular specialisations regulated by SHINE transcription factors

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 3, Page 1188-1208, August 2026.
Cuticle defects result from defective HvBDG1 alleles. Summary Land plants secrete a protective outer cuticular layer with diverse functions. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) develops two cuticular specialisations: the β‐diketone rich wax bloom on vegetative tissues and an adherent grain surface which sticks to the hulls, leading to barley's distinctive ...

Conserved symbiosis‐associated genes in the cycad Encephalartos natalensis suggest co‐option for cyanobacterial symbiosis

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 4, Page 2168-2185, August 2026.
The heterocyst‐rich Encephalartos natalensis cyanobacterial zone in coralloid root suggests co‐option of conserved symbiosis‐associated genes. This figure was created in BioRender (BioRender.com/https://BioRender.com/n3qveqc). Summary Plant‐cyanobacterial symbioses have evolved independently at least four times across land plants, yet their underlying ...

Root hair plasticity in cereals under abiotic stress

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 4, Page 1684-1693, August 2026.
An integrative perspective on how to study the regulation of root hair plasticity to increase the resilience of cereals to abiotic stress. Summary Abiotic stress is a constant threat to crop growth and yield in the context of climate change. Root systems that can best adapt their architecture to environmental challenges contribute to enhanced ...

Mutasynthesis and Antibiotic Activity of Mupirocin Analogues

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 13, 14 July 2026.
A mutasynthetic strategy was developed to prepare pseudomonic acid analogues, and their antimicrobial activities were evaluated against five bacterial strains. Feeding studies with mutant strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens revealed that C7‐desepoxy‐PA‐B was metabolised to C7‐PA‐C with loss of the 8‐hydroxyl group, but no fatty acid chain extension ...

Dissection and Engineering of Modular Polyketide Synthase Extender Unit Specificity Motifs

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 13, 14 July 2026.
Motif‐level engineering of acyltransferase domains in polyketide synthases enables programable extender unit selectivity. Cooperative mutations and motif exchanges reprogram substrate preference, enabling the incorporation of non‐native extender units and expanding polyketide structural diversity, with gains in activity and product yield.
