Hyaluronan (HA) Receptors: Discovery, Function & Pathology

open access: yesProteoglycan Research, Volume 4, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Hyaluronan (HA) is typically a long polymer of the repeating disaccharide, glucuronic acid‐β‐(1‐3)‐N‐acetylglucosamine polymerized by β(1‐4) bonds, with no obvious active site for biological activity. However, this dynamic polymer is vital for life in all metazoans and has a diverse array of functional characteristics due to the proteins that ...

Extracellular matrix and proteolysis: mechanisms driving irreversible changes and shaping cell behavior

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 13, Page 3788-3813, July 2026.
Irreversible ECM proteolysis by remodeling enzymes shapes development, homeostasis, and disease. ECM‐degrading proteases display cell specificity and are governed by shared mechanisms, exhibiting functional redundancy in generating matrikines, growth factors, and cytokines.

Focal experimental injury leads to widespread gene expression and histologic changes in equine flexor tendons. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
It is not known how extensively a localised flexor tendon injury affects the entire tendon. This study examined the extent of and relationship between histopathologic and gene expression changes in equine superficial digital flexor tendon after a ...

Degradomics for large‐scale mechanistic insights on proteases and proteolysis in human health

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 13, Page 3881-3898, July 2026.
Proteolysis has an important role in human disease but remains relatively unexplored. Degradomics, the uncovering of proteolysis in tissues, cells, and proteins, uses mass spectrometry‐based terminomics to identify protein termini occurring therein (forward degradomics) and to define the actions of proteases (reverse degradomics).

Membrane‐type I metalloproteinase (MT1‐MMP): A key modifier of extracellular matrix microenvironment

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 13, Page 4085-4097, July 2026.
MT1‐MMP: A cellular microenvironment modifier. MT1‐MMP is a major cellular microenvironment modifier, maintaining collagen homeostasis by degrading excess collagen (A), creating a migration path in motile cells such as cancer cells (B), modulating local microenvironmental signaling by cleaving transmembrane receptors (C), and destroying tissue ...

Proteolytic remodelling of the extracellular matrix by pericytes

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 13, Page 3899-3953, July 2026.
Pericytes are specialised perivascular cells intimately connected with endothelial cells and essential for the maintenance of vascular beds. They contribute to the formation and remodelling of the extracellular matrix by actively secreting proteases and protease inhibitors.

ADAM19 and ADAMTS4 expression in Human Optic Nerve Head Astrocytes [PDF]

open access: yes
Purpose: Glaucoma is characterized by the degeneration and death of retinal ganglion cells and their axons causing irreversible blindness. Various risk factors contribute to glaucoma onset, including intraocular pressure (IOP), age, and family history ...

Trained Memory of Uterine Macrophages Improves Subsequent Pregnancy Outcomes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 31, 4 June 2026.
This study identifies that pregnancy imprints a durable, pregnancy‐specific form of trained immune memory in uterine macrophages, marked by the emergence of LILRB3+/PIR‐B+ cells that expand across gestations, acquire a tolerogenic and metabolically rewired phenotype, and actively protect against inflammatory pregnancy loss in mice.

Contributions of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative to advancing AD research: a targeted review of recent publications

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, reflecting two decades of major contributions to Alzheimer's research through open data sharing and longitudinal multimodal assessments. This review synthesizes 122 high‐impact studies using ADNI data or biospecimens from 2023 to mid‐2025 to ...

Inhibition of ADAMTS4 (aggrecanase-1) by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP-1, 2, 3 and 4) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
ADAMTS4 (aggrecanase-1) is considered to play a key role in the degradation of aggrecan in arthritides. The inhibitory activity of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) to ADAMTS4 was examined in an assay using aggrecan substrate.
