Diffusion‐based size determination of solute particles: a method adapted for postsynaptic proteins

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We present a diffusion‐based approach for measuring the size of macromolecules and their complexes, and demonstrate its use on postsynaptic proteins. The method requires fluorescein‐labelled protein samples, a microfluidic device that maintains laminar flow for said samples, a microscope recording the emitted fluorescent signals, and an analytic ...

Effects of Conjugation with Basil Seed Gum on Physicochemical, Functional, Foaming, and Emulsifying Properties of Albumin, Whey Protein Isolate and Soy Protein Isolate

open access: yesFoods
Protein conjugation with the Maillard reaction has received considerable attention in the past decades in terms of improving functional properties. This study evaluated the changes in the techno-functional properties of whey protein isolate (WPI), soy ...

Short‐term actions of epigalocatechin‐3‐gallate in the liver: a mechanistic insight into hypoglycemic and potential toxic effects

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Epigallocatechin‐3‐gallate (EGCG) acutely inhibited gluconeogenesis and enhanced glycolysis, glycogenolysis, and fatty acid oxidation in perfused rat livers. Mechanistic assays revealed mitochondrial uncoupling, inhibition of pyruvate carboxylation and glucose‐6‐phosphatase, shift of NADH/NAD+ ratios toward oxidation, and loss of membrane integrity ...

Isoelectric point of albumin: Effect on renal handling of albumin

open access: yesKidney International, 1979
Electrical charge is thought to be an important factor in the integrity of the glomerular barrier to filtration of macromolecules [1, 2]. Studies that have explored the integrity of the glomerular barrier to filtration have been done with heterologous tracer or probe proteins and with polysaccharide macromolecules.

Indoleamine 2,3‐dioxygenase 1 inhibition reverses cancer‐associated fibroblast‐mediated immunosuppression in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CAF‐mediated immunosuppression in ovarian cancer is driven by IDO1, reducing T‐cell function. Inhibiting IDO1 restores T‐cell proliferation and cytotoxicity, increases cancer cell apoptosis, and may help overcome CAF‐induced immune suppression in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer. Targeting IDO1 may improve antitumor immunity.

Blood urea nitrogen-to-albumin ratio as a new prognostic indicator of 1-year all-cause mortality in patients with IPF

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
BackgroundIdiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an interstitial lung disease characterized by chronic inflammation and progressive fibrosis. The blood urea nitrogen-to-albumin ratio (BAR) is a comprehensive parameter associated with inflammation status;

HSP70 governs permeability and mechanotransduction in primary human endothelial cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
HSP70 chemical inhibition reduces endothelial cell proliferation and increases permeability, the latter supported by normal interendothelial junctional protein distribution. HSP70 also plays a role in shear stress response, a hemodynamic force naturally present in blood vessels and correlated with vessel protection.

CSF Mitochondrial DNA: Biomarker of Body Composition and Energy Metabolism in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cell‐free mitochondrial DNA (cf‐mtDNA) is a potential biomarker for Parkinson's disease (PD), but its clinical relevance remains unclear. We investigated associations between CSF cf‐mtDNA levels, body composition, nutritional status, and metabolic biomarkers in PD. Methods CSF cf‐mtDNA levels, defined as the
