The Role of the Mucus Barrier in Digestion [PDF]
Mucus forms a protective layer across a variety of epithelial surfaces. In the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the barrier has to permit the uptake of nutrients, while excluding potential hazards, such as pathogenic bacteria.

Modulating the Gut Microbiota with Alginate Oligosaccharides In Vitro
Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) are non-digestible carbohydrates from brown kelp. As such, they are dietary fibers and may have prebiotic potential. Therefore, we investigated the capacity of gut bacteria to utilize AOS with single-strain cultures and as a complex bacterial community.

Purification and characterization of alginate lyase from locally isolated marine Pseudomonas stutzeri MSEA04 [PDF]
An alginate lyase with high specific enzyme activity was purified from Pseudomonas stutzeri MSEA04, isolated from marine brown algae. The alginate lyase was purified by precipitation with ammonium sulphate, acetone and ethanol individually.
