Alpha-Lipoic Acid Reduces NLRP3/ASC Expression and IL-1β Release in Kupffer Cells and Improves Insulin Signaling in FL83B Hepatocytes Exposed to a Conditioned Medium. [PDF]

open access: yesFood Sci Nutr
Alpha‐lipoic acid (ALA) reduced NLRP3/ASC expression, attenuated upstream NF‐κB/ERK signaling, and decreased IL‐1β release while preserving mitochondrial membrane potential in murine Kupffer cells subjected to LPS priming and a second signal. Conditioned medium from ALA‐pretreated Kupffer cells (particularly 100 μM) enhanced glucose uptake and improved

Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Diabetic Neuropathy [PDF]

open access: yesThe Review of Diabetic Studies, 2009
Diabetic neuropathy presents a major public health problem. It is defined by the symptoms and signs of peripheral nerve dysfunction in diabetic patients, in whom other causes of neuropathy have been excluded. Pathogenetic mechanisms that have been implicated in diabetic neuropathy are: a) increased flux through the polyol pathway, leading to ...

Dietary Alpha-Lipoic Acid Alters Piglet Neurodevelopment [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2016
Alpha-lipoic acid (a-LA) is an antioxidant shown to ameliorate age-associated impairments of brain and cardiovascular function. Human milk is known to have high antioxidant capacity; however, the role of antioxidants in the developing brain is largely uncharacterized.

Dihydro-alpha-lipoic acid has more potent cytotoxicity than alpha-lipoic acid

open access: yesIn Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology - Animal, 2009
Alpha-lipoic acid has been shown to possess cancer-cell-killing activity via activation of the apoptosis pathway. In this study, the cytotoxic activities of alpha-lipoic and dihydro-alpha-lipoic acid were compared in HL-60 cells. The cell-killing activity of dihydro-alpha-lipoic acid was higher than that of alpha-lipoic acid.
