The effects of alphavirus infection on neurons
Annals of Neurology, 1994Sindbis virus is an alphavirus that causes encephalitis in mice. The primary target cells for central nervous system infection are neurons. The outcome of neuronal infection is dependent on the age of the mouse at the time of infection (maturity of the neuron) and the strain of virus used for infection (virulence of the virus).

Alphavirus Entry into Host Cells
2015Viruses have evolved to exploit the vast complexity of cellular processes for their success within the host cell. The entry mechanisms of enveloped viruses (viruses with a surrounding outer lipid bilayer membrane) are usually classified as being either endocytotic or fusogenic.

The regulation of disassembly of alphavirus cores
Archives of Virology, 2009Alphaviruses are used as model viruses for structure determination and for analysis of virus entry. They are used also as vectors for protein expression and gene therapy. Virus particles are assembled by budding, using preformed cores and a modified cellular membrane. During entry, alphaviruses release the viral core into the cytoplasm.

Alphavirus-Based Expression Systems
1996Alphaviruses are enveloped positive-strand RNA viruses transmitted to vertebrate hosts via mosquito vectors (reviewed in 34). In the last several years, the alphavirus RNA replication and packaging machinery have been exploited for cytoplasmic expression of heterologous RNAs and proteins in animal cells (for reviews see 3, 24, 27).
