Antibiotic-induced dysbiosis in the SCIME™ recapitulates microbial community diversity and metabolites modulation of in vivo disease

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Establishing the contextIntestinal dysbiosis is a significant concern among dog owners, and the gut health of pets is an emerging research field. In this context, the Simulator of the Canine Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SCIME™) was recently developed ...

Open source software toolchain for automated non‐targeted screening for toxins in alternative foods

open access: yesMethodsX, 2021
Previous published methods for non-targeted screening of toxins in alternative foods such as leaf concentrate, agricultural residues or plastic fed to biological consortia are time consuming and expensive and thus present accessibility, as well as, time ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Next generation in vitro primary hepatic cell test systems—their suitability as an alternative to in vivo testing?

open access: yes, 2020
To date traditional toxicity testing has relied heavily on in-life animal studies that are expensive and restrictive with regards to very important ethical implications. In addition, these studies often yield data that are not relevant to human exposures

Transforming Intensive Animal Production: Challenges and Opportunities for Farm Animal Welfare in the European Union

open access: yes, 2022
SIMPLE SUMMARY: The European Union (EU) has made commitments to review all established policies on farm animal welfare and by the end of 2023 propose new regulations that will improve farming conditions and phase out the use of cage-based systems. A case

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
