Mechanistic basis for inhibition of the extended‐spectrum β‐lactamase GES‐1 by enmetazobactam and tazobactam

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is of huge importance, resulting in over 1 million deaths each year. Here, we describe how a new drug, enmetazobactam, designed to help fight resistant bacterial diseases, inhibits a key enzyme (GES‐1) responsible for AMR. Our data show it is a more potent inhibitor than the related tazobactam, with high‐level computation

Amino Acid Transporters on Amino Acid Absorption, Transport and Distribution in Crops

open access: yesHorticulturae
Amino acid transporters mediate amino acid transport within and between cells and are the main mediators of nitrogen distribution in plants, which is crucial for maintaining plant growth and development.

Some bee-pollinated plants provide nutritionally incomplete pollen amino acid resources to their pollinators.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
For pollinators such as bees, nectar mainly provides carbohydrates and pollen provides proteins, amino acids, and lipids to cover their nutritional needs. Here, to examine differences in pollinator resources, we compared the amino acid profiles and total

Amino acid disorders.

open access: yesAnnals of Translational Medicine, 2018
Amino acids serve as key building blocks and as an energy source for cell repair, survival, regeneration and growth. Each amino acid has an amino group, a carboxylic acid, and a unique carbon structure.

C9orf72 ALS‐causing mutations lead to mislocalization and aggregation of nucleoporin Nup107 into stress granules

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutations in the C9orf72 gene represent the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Using patient‐derived neurons and C. elegans models, we find that the nucleoporin Nup107 is dysregulated in C9orf72‐associated ALS. Conversely, reducing Nup107 levels mitigates disease‐related changes.

Impaired amino acid uptake leads to global metabolic imbalance of Candida albicans biofilms

open access: yesnpj Biofilms and Microbiomes, 2022
Candida albicans biofilm maturation is accompanied by enhanced expression of amino acid acquisition genes. Three state-of-the-art omics techniques were applied to detail the importance of active amino acid uptake during biofilm development.

Amino acid homeostasis and signalling in mammalian cells and organisms

open access: yesBiochemical Journal, 2017
Cells have a constant turnover of proteins that recycle most amino acids over time. Net loss is mainly due to amino acid oxidation. Homeostasis is achieved through exchange of essential amino acids with non-essential amino acids and the transfer of amino

Genetic and serological heterogeneity of the supertypic HLA-B locus specificities Bw4 and Bw6 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
Gene cloning and sequencing of the HLA-B locus split antigens B38 (B16.1) and B39 (B16.2) allowed localization of their subtypic as well as their public specificities HLA-Bw4 or -Bw6 to the c~-helical region of the c~ 1 domain flanked by the amino acid ...

Protein kinase FAM20C—when subcellular localization matters

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
FAM20C is a Golgi‐resident kinase that phosphorylates proteins along the entire secretory pathway. The presence of potential FAM20C substrates in the cytoplasm or nucleus raises the question of how the kinase and its substrates encounter each other. Protein kinases achieve signaling specificity through consensus sequence recognition and subcellular ...
