Immunization of pigs against the boar taint steroid androstenone
Journal of Comparative Pathology, 1984Tissue concentrations of androstenone were measured in untreated control pigs and pigs immunized against 5 alpha-androst-16-en-3-one. Results confirmed that active immunization of male pigs against androstenone is unlikely to prevent the problem of "boar taint" in the carcass meat.

Consumer acceptability of entire male pork at eating was assessed in three experiments. The 140 consumers involved in each experiment were classified as insensitive (INSENS) to the odor of pure androstenone or sensitive perceiving it as pleasant (SENS-PLEA) or unpleasant (SENS-UNPL). Entire male pork with very low skatole and androstenone levels (LS-LA)

Abstract Four European sensory panels where all (38) assessors, when recruited, were able to detect dry androstenone crystals through smelling, were reclassified in terms of sensitivity using a recently developed sensitivity method based both on the assessor’s ability to detect androstenone and the spontaneous descriptor used to describe the odour ...

Abstract Fat samples from 43,13 entire males taken from six European countries were measured for androstenone and skatole using rapid ELISA and colourimetric methods, respectively. The samples were collected during summer (replicate 1) and during the following winter period (replicate 2).

A selective immunization procedure against 5α-androstenone in boars
Animal Science, 1982ABSTRACTAn auto-immunization procedure selective for boar 5α-androstenone is described. Immunization of boars with a conjugate of androstenone and bovine serum albumin as a carrier protein significantly reduced the accumulation of androstenone in adipose tissue from a mean value of 0·77 (s.e. 0·19)mg/kg fat for untreated boars to 0·24 (s.e. 0·06) mg/kg

5α-Androstenone concentrations in sow plasma during the estrous cycle
Theriogenology, 1980Plasma concentrations of 5alpha-androst-16-en-3-one (5alpha-androstenone), the steroid responsible for boar taint, were measured by radioimmuno-assay in eight sows during the estrous cycle. The steroid concentrations ranged from a low of approximately 500 pg/ml to a high of 2.2 ng/ml during the estrous cycle.

Changes in sensitivity to the odor of androstenone during adolescence
Developmental Psychobiology, 1989AbstractWhile it has been reported that most, if not all, very young children are able to detect the odor of 5α‐androst‐16‐en‐3‐one (androstenone), approximately 40–50% of human adults cannot detect its odor. The present study focused on changes in sensitivity to androstenone was determined in 247 subjects aged 6 to 50. There was a significant increase

Sex Differences in Response to the Odor of Alpha Androstenone
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1990Additional analyses of ratings by 98 male and 102 female college students assigned to one of four odor conditions showed no significant correlations for the methyl anthranilate or skatole odor conditions, but the pattern of correlations for men and women was different in the alpha androstenone condition, e.g., if men found alpha androstenone pleasant ...
