Urea cycle disorders and indications for liver transplantation

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2023
Urea cycle disorders (UCD) are inborn errors of metabolism caused by deficiency of enzymes required to convert nitrogen from ammonia into urea.

A nationwide assessment of hepatocellular adenoma resection: Indications and pathological discordance

open access: yesHepatology Communications, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) are benign liver tumors associated with bleeding or malignant transformation. Data on the indication for surgery are scarce. We analyzed indications and outcome of patients operated for HCAs < 50 mm compared to HCAs ≥ 50 mm. Changes in final postoperative diagnosis were assessed.

Analysis of ASS1 gene in ten unrelated middle eastern families with citrullinemia type 1 identifies rare and novel variants

open access: yesMolecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine, 2023
Background Citrullinemia type 1 (CTLN1) is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS) deficiency. Manifestations vary from the acute neonatal or “classic” form to a milder, late‐onset, or “unconventional” form.

Sequence for human argininosuccinate synthetase cDNA [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 1983
The nucleotide sequence for human argininosuccinate synthetase cDNA was determined by analysis of six clones isolated from a single experiment. The sequence covered 1623 nucleotides including 76 bases of poly(A) and contained a 1236 nucleotide open reading frame encoding a protein of 46,434 daltons.

Arginine deprivation alters microglial polarity and synergizes with radiation to eradicate non-arginine-auxotrophic glioblastoma tumors

open access: yesThe Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2022
New approaches for the management of glioblastoma (GBM) are an urgent and unmet clinical need. Here, we illustrate that the efficacy of radiotherapy for GBM is strikingly potentiated by concomitant therapy with the arginine-depleting agent ADI-PEG20 in a

Essential Oral Single Nutritional Therapy Products for Inherited Metabolic Diseases: Evidence and Consensus Assessment Using a Modified Delphi Method. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Inherit Metab Dis
ABSTRACT Nutritional therapy is critical in managing inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs), and includes specialized diets and single nutritional therapy products (sNTPs) such as vitamins, cofactors, and amino acids. Many sNTPs function as medicines, but are regulated as food (e.g., food supplements), which can limit access, reimbursement, and consistent

Yeast Argininosuccinate Synthetase [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1979
Yeast argininosuccinate synthetase has been purified to homogeneity. The enzyme was found to have a molecular weight of 228000 as determined by gel sieving. It is composed of identical subunits of Mr 49000 as shown by gel electrophoresis. The quaternary structure as determined by cross‐linking of the subunits with glutaraldehyde, followed by gel ...

Comparison of dietary arginine or/and inulin supplementation on growth, digestive ability and ammonia tolerance of juvenile yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco

open access: yesAquaculture Reports, 2023
Most fish have limited use of arginine, and increasing arginine availability by adding other nutrients is an effective method. Inulin is thought to have potential synergistic effects with arginine.

Aberrant expression and distribution of enzymes of the urea cycle and other ammonia metabolizing pathways in dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The detoxification of ammonia occurs mainly through conversion of ammonia to urea in the liver via the urea cycle and glutamine synthesis. Congenital portosystemic shunts (CPSS) in dogs cause hyperammonemia eventually leading to hepatic encephalopathy ...
