Genetic and genomic approaches for the discovery of parasite genes involved in antimalarial drug resistance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The biggest threat to the war on malaria is the continued evolution of drug resistance by the parasite. Resistance to almost all currently available antimalarials now exists in Plasmodium falciparum which causes the most suffering among all human malaria

Disarming the Hsp70–Bim Alliance: Small‐Molecule and Peptidic Disruptors of a Chaperone‐Apoptotic Switch in Cancer

open access: yesChemistryOpen, EarlyView.
Targeting a nucleotide‐sensitive groove on Hsp70 that binds the Bim BH3 helix, we integrate structures, biophysics, and SAR from peptides, fragments, and phenalene‐dicarbonitrile “wedges.” These disrupt the Hsp70–Bim complex with sub‐µM cellular engagement and in vivo activity while sparing Hsp90/mortalin.

First use of intravenous artesunate in Liberia and effect on patient mortality relative to artemeter and quinine: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesThe Lancet Global Health, 2014
Background: Intravenous artesunate reduces mortality by 35% relative to intravenous quinine. In 2010, WHO changed guidelines favouring intravenous artesunate, yet wide-scale adoption lags.

Artesunate Inhibits the Cell Growth in Colorectal Cancer by Promoting ROS-Dependent Cell Senescence and Autophagy

open access: yesCells, 2022
Although artesunate has been reported to be a promising candidate for colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment, the underlying mechanisms and molecular targets of artesunate are yet to be explored.

Anti-malarial drug artesunate restores metabolic changes in experimental allergic asthma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The anti-malarial drug artesunate possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative actions in experimental asthma, comparable to corticosteroid. We hypothesized that artesunate may modulate disease-relevant metabolic alterations in allergic asthma.

Artemisinin‐Based Combination Therapies in East Africa: A Systematic Review of Quality, Clinical Efficacy, and Regulatory Progress Towards Sustainable Malaria Control

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Malaria is a major public health issue in East Africa, leading to widespread illness and fatalities, especially among vulnerable populations such as children under 5 years of age and pregnant women. Artemisinin‐based combination therapies (ACTs) are the primary treatment modality; however, their efficacy is undermined by the ...

Varying efficacy of artesunate+amodiaquine and artesunate+sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine for the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria in the Democratic Republic of Congo: a report of two in-vivo studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
BACKGROUND: Very few data on anti-malarial efficacy are available from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). DRC changed its anti-malarial treatment policy to amodiaquine (AQ) and artesunate (AS) in 2005.

Natural Products in Cancer Prevention and Therapy: Current Challenges and Future Directions

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 2, February 2026.
Natural products play a pivotal role in cancer therapy. They induce cancer cell death by reprogramming four metabolic pathways while precisely targeting the tumor microenvironment and immune cells. These compounds not only leverage novel delivery systems for innovative applications but also demonstrate unique therapeutic efficacy across clinical stages:

Glyoxalase‐1 Inhibition Leads to Ferroptosis Induction in Lung Cancer Cells: A Dual Mechanism of Action of Hydroxamic Acids Derived from Cysteine

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 1, January 2026.
A set of three cysteine‐derived hydroxamic acids were synthesized and evaluated for human gloxalase‐1 inhibition and ferroptosis induction activities. Among them, compound 2 exhibited a potent inhibitory effect against human glyoxalase‐1 and induced ferroptosis in non‐small cell lung cancer cell lines, increasing reactive oxygen species production and ...
