A Natural History of ‘Annoyances’: Knowing Weeds and Weeding Knowledge in the Early Royal Society and its ‘Georgicall Committee’

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Seventeenth‐century virtuosi often figured themselves as epistemic weeders, grubbing up rank thickets of accumulated error. In this article, I argue that these metaphors were unnerved by the shifting status of weeds—ostensibly unwanted plants from the margins of cultivated space, unploughed land or the disturbed soils between growing crops—in ...

Recent Advances in Boron Removal From Geothermal Waters: A Review

open access: yesWater and Environment Journal, EarlyView.
This review provides a comprehensive overview of boron removal technologies from geothermal fluids and highlights the limitations of conventional treatment methods. Ion exchange, hybrid processes and membrane filtration are identified as the most dominant approaches in recent studies.

EFFECT OF SOME TREATMENTS ON GLOBE ARTICHOKE SEED PORODUCTION UNDER EGYPTIAN CONDITION A-FOLIAR SPRAY WITH BORON AND POTASSIUM ON HEAD AND SEED YIELD. [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Plant Production, 2014
Two field experiments were conducted at Baramoon Research Station, Mansoura, Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt during the two successive seasons of 2011/12 and 2012/13, to study the effect of foliar spray with boron (25 and 50 ppm) or potassium (1000 ...

Beneficial Role of Natural Polyphenols Against Epilepsy: Greasing the Wheels of Pharmacotherapy Research for Epilepsy

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Epilepsy is the most disabling neurological disease that affects all economic classes, age groups, regions, and races. Although many antiseizure drugs are approved for epilepsy treatment, they fail to work in about 30%–40% of patients. Thus, there is a great need to identify better pharmacological agents to treat epilepsy.

Harvest Time Influences Inulin and Phenolic Accumulation of Globe Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L.)

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 11, November 2026.
Globe artichoke heart fructans were positively correlated with solar radiation exposure while phenolics were negatively correlated. Browning was positively correlated with phenolics, especially dicaffeoylquinic acid isomer. Artichoke hearts with high phenolic contents had higher CIE b* values (yellowness).

Genome reconstruction in Cynara cardunculus taxa gains access to chromosome-scale DNA variation

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The genome sequence of globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus, 2n = 2x = 34) is now available for use. A survey of C. cardunculus genetic resources is essential for understanding the evolution of the species, carrying out genetic studies ...

Artichoke Polyphenols Rich in 1,4‐Dicaffeoylquinic Acid Regulate Lipid Metabolism via the PPAR and AMPK Pathways to Alleviate Hepatic Lipid Accumulation

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, Volume 23, Issue 10, October 2026.
Artichoke bract polyphenols, particularly from inner bracts, are rich in 1,4‐dicaffeoylquinic acid and chlorogenic acid. In oleic acid‐induced HepG2 cells, these polyphenols activate AMPK and modulate PPARγ signaling, reducing lipid accumulation. These findings highlight the potential of artichoke bracts, including agricultural waste outer bracts, as ...

A Protocol for Producing Virus-Free Artichoke Genetic Resources for Conservation, Breeding, and Production

open access: yesAgriculture, 2018
The potential of the globe artichoke biodiversity in the Mediterranean area is enormous but at risk of genetic erosion because only a limited number of varieties are vegetatively propagated and grown.
