The Biosynthesis of Astaxanthin Esters in Schizochytrium sp. is Mediated by a Bifunctional Diacylglycerol Acyltransferase

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry
Astaxanthin esters are a major form of astaxanthin found in nature. However, the exact mechanisms of the biosynthesis and storage of astaxanthin esters were previously unknown. We found that Schizochytrium sp. synthesized both astaxanthin and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-enriched lipids.

Formulation and physicochemical characterization of astaxanthin-loaded liposomes: A comparative study of free and ester forms with different E/Z-isomer ratios of astaxanthin

Food Research International
The present study aimed to developed astaxanthin (AST)-loaded liposomes in different forms (free and ester forms) and with varying E/Z-isomer ratios and compare their physicochemical properties. Four liposomes, i.e., liposomes of free-form all-E- and Z-isomer-rich AST (E- and Z-AST-Free-L, respectively) and ester-form all-E- and Z-isomer-rich AST (E ...

Separation and identification of astaxanthin esters and chlorophylls in Haematococcus lacustris by HPLC

2010
An isocratic reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the separation of carotenoids and chlorophylls from extracts of Haematococcus lacustris. Astaxanthin monoesters are the principal carotenoids in Haematococcus lacustris.
