Sites of B-cell activation in vivo
Current Opinion in Immunology, 1993Novel techniques have made possible in situ analyses of the lymphocyte populations responding to antigen. In the spleen, antigen-specific T and B cells are first observed in the periarteriolar lymphoid sheath. Following conjugate formation between specific T and B lymphocytes, B-cell proliferation and differentiation takes place in two distinct sites ...

Peripheral activation of antigen-specific T cells is stringently controlled to prevent immune responses against self-antigens. Only after a T cell is presented with two signals, an antigen and a co-stimulatory signal, can they be fully activated. In case antigen presentation occurs without co-stimulation, T-cell receptor (TCR) signaling pathways are ...

The term “B cell activation” describes processes by which small resting B cells, in G0 phase, are stimulated to divide and produce large amounts of secretory Ig molecules. If they are not activated, virgin B cells have a short life and memory B cells remain dormant.

Activation of B lymphocytes by NK cells
International Immunology, 1992The ability of NK cells to induce differentiation of B lymphocytes to IgM secretion in vitro has been investigated. Homogeneous preparations of NK cells obtained from IL-2 propagated splenocytes from SCID mice were found to have the ability to induce resting B lymphocytes to proliferate and secrete significant amounts of IgM.

Polyclonal B‐cell activation in periodontitis*
Journal of Periodontal Research, 1989The evidence that periodontitis-associated bacteria contain potent PBA factors is very strong. Clearly, antibodies directed against non-oral antigens are produced in the inflamed periodontal lesion, and PBA appears to contribute to that production.

Complement activation by a B cell superantigen
The Journal of Immunology, 1996Abstract Staphylococcal protein A (SpA), acting as a B cell superantigen, binds to the Fab region of human VH3+ Igs. Using SpA abrogated of its IgG Fc binding activity (Mod SpA) as a model B cell superantigen, we determined whether such an interaction causes complement activation.

CD21/CD35 in B cell activation
Seminars in Immunology, 1998The stimulus induced via the B cell receptor is a major factor in determination of the fate of naive B cells resulting in activation, elimination or anergy. The strength of B cell signal transduction is dependent not only on the affinity of antigen binding, but by positive signals via the co-receptor CD21/CD19/Tapa-1.

B cell superstimulatory influenza virus activates peritoneal B cells
The Journal of Immunology, 1995Abstract We evaluated the potential of B cell “superstimulatory” influenza viruses to activate peritoneal B cells (PBC) from BALB/c mice containing both CD5+ and CD5- “sister” cells. Like conventional B cells, PBCs responded to influenza viruses in a hemagglutinin glycoprotein (HA) subtype-specific manner with proliferation and ...

Abstract B lymphocytes are the precursors of antibody-forming cells (AFC), which express clonally distributed surface immunoglobulin (slg) receptors for antigen (generally slgM and slgD). B cells are generated in the bone marrow throughout adult life: this process involves an ordered sequence of gene rearrangements which gener ates a ...

Notch activity synergizes with B-cell–receptor and CD40 signaling to enhance B-cell activation
Blood, 2006AbstractHow diverse environmental cues are integrated to regulate B-cell activation and development remains poorly understood. Here we show that Notch activity synergizes with B-cell receptor (BCR) and/or CD40 signaling to enhance several aspects of B-cell activation and function.
