Recursive design in this book is composed of some simple basic steps. They are referred to as “backstepping designs” because they step back toward the control input starting with a scalar equation. This chapter reviews basic backstepping tools for state feedback control and output feedback control. To easily grasp the design and analysis procedures, we

Adaptive backstepping algorithms for a class of nonlinear continuous uncertain processes with disturbances are considered. Sliding mode control using a combined adaptive backstepping sliding mode control algorithm is also studied. The algorithms follow a systematic procedure for the design of adaptive control laws for the output of observable minimum ...

Architecture Induced by Distributed Backstepping Design
IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 2004An important problem in the distributed control of large-scale and infinite dimensional systems is related to the choice of the appropriate controller architecture. We utilize backstepping as a tool for distributed control of nonlinear infinite dimensional systems on lattices, and provide the answer to the following question: what is the worst case ...

Synchronizing chaotic systems using backstepping design
Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, 2003The paper deals with the problem of synchronization of coupled systems. Given two systems (possibly exhibiting chaotic dynamics) \(x'=f(x,t)\) and \(y'=f(y,t)+u\), \(x,y\in \mathbb{R}^{n}\). The authors propose a recursive procedure for designing an appropriate control \(u\), which makes the systems synchronized, i.e., \(\| x(t)-y(t)\| \to 0\) as \(t ...

Bounded backstepping approach under input delays
2015 European Control Conference (ECC), 2015We present a new backstepping result for control affine time-varying systems with input delays. The novelty of our work is in the bounds on the controls, and the facts that (i) one does not need to compute any Lie derivatives to apply our controls and (ii) the controls have no distributed terms.

Decentralized Neural Backstepping Control
2017This chapter deals with trajectory tracking for a class of discrete-time decentralized nonlinear systems. A high order neural network is used to approximate a decentralized control law designed by the backstepping technique as applied to a block strict feedback form. The neural network learning is performed on-line by extended Kalman filtering.
