Production of bioethanol from residual barley and utilization of fermentation co‐products in animal nutrition

open access: yesEnvironmental Progress &Sustainable Energy, EarlyView.
Abstract The search for sustainable alternatives for bioethanol production has encouraged the valorization of agro‐industrial residues. This study evaluated the use of residual barley as a feedstock for bioethanol production and as a potential ingredient for ruminant feed.

The biological activity of beta-glucans

open access: yes, 2009
This review summarizes the recent knowledge about the positive effect of betaglucans on human health. Beta-glucans are polysaccharides occurring in the bran of cereal grains (barley and oats and to a much lesser degree in rye and wheat, in amounts of ...

Healthy Snacks Elaborated With Decoction Residues of Hibiscus sabdariffa L: Physical and Sensory Characteristics

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
Healthy snacks formulated with food by‐products are gaining interest within the food industry. Decoction residues of Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle) retain thermostable polyphenols. Extruded snacks enriched with roselle showed a reduction in the expansion index as the roselle concentration increased.

Abstract 5627: Antitumor activity of soluble beta-1,3/1,6 glucans: Structure matters

open access: yes, 2010
Beta-glucan is a pathogen-associated molecular pattern recognized by a variety of innate immune cells. Beta-1,3/1,6 glucans possess numerous immune potentiating activities.

Effect of Pretreatment Methods on the Proximate Composition, Antinutritional Factors, Antioxidants Properties, and In Vitro Antidiabetic Activities of Hypsizygus ulmarius

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
The effect of pretreatment methods on the proximate content, antinutrient factors, antioxidant, and in vitro antidiabetic activities of elm oyster mushroom was studied. It was observed and statistically concluded that soaking in 0.5% salt solution for 5 min had the least deteriorating effect on the antioxidant and in vitro antidiabetic activities ...

Beta-Glucans as Immunomodulators in Poultry: Use and Potential Applications

open access: yes, 2010
Escalating consumer concerns have placed the poultry industry under mounting pressure to reduce the use of chemotherapeutic agents as feed additives. One possible alternative receiving increased attention is the use of immunomodulators such as β-glucan.

Dietary and biomarker‐guided strategies as supportive measures in the fragile X syndrome

open access: yesFood Biomacromolecules, EarlyView.
Abstract The fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an inherited neurodevelopmental disorder that primarily affects males, often resulting in an IQ below 55, while about two‐thirds of females also experience intellectual disability. Physical features may include an elongated face, prominent ears, finger joint laxity, and enlarged testes in males.

Isolation and characterization of beta-glucans of natural origin

open access: yes, 2022
The bachelor thesis deals with the characterization of natural beta-glucans and other active substances isolated from macroalgae and yeasts. The used macroalgae samples differ in the pigment, origin and method of algae processing.

Determination of chain conformation of polysaccharides using a SEC‐MALLS‐Vis

open access: yesFood Biomacromolecules, EarlyView.
Abstract For polysaccharides, biological activity is associated with the chemical structure as well as the chain conformation. The chain conformation is conventionally derived from the scaling relationships between weight‐average molecular weight (Mw) and intrinsic viscosity ([η]) or the radius of gyration (Rg) or the translational diffusion ...
