Resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics in Streptococcus faecium [PDF]
Clinical isolates of Streptococcus faecium are characteristically resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics. Two strains, selected for hypersusceptibility to penicillin, were derived from normally resistant isolates treated with novobiocin. These strains were also found to be hypersusceptible to other beta-lactams.

Beta-Lactam-Resistant Enterobacterales Isolated from Landfill Leachates
Antibiotic resistance is one of the main challenges worldwide due to the high morbidity and mortality caused by infections produced by resistant bacteria. In Colombia, this problem has been studied mainly from the clinical perspective; however, it is scarcely studied in the leachates produced in landfills.

Background: Emergence of extended-spectrum -lactamases (ESBLs) in Shigella species imparting resistance to third-generation cephalosporins is a growing concern worldwide. The aim of this study is to molecularly characterize the newly emerging beta-lactam

Antimicrobials: a global alliance for optimizing their rational use in intra-abdominal infections (AGORA) [PDF]
Intra-abdominal infections (IAI) are an important cause of morbidity and are frequently associated with poor prognosis, particularly in high-risk patients.

It has long been recognized that the modification of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) to reduce their affinity for beta-lactams is an important mechanism (target modification) by which Gram-positive cocci acquire antibiotic resistance.

Beta-lactam-specific resistant mutants of Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]
In an approach to understanding the origin of methicillin resistance in clinical isolates of staphylococci, a series of Staphylococcus aureus mutants resistant to various beta-lactam antibiotics were isolated in the laboratory by antibiotic selection. Mutants with low- and intermediate-level resistance showed considerable specificity for the particular

Evaluation of the ESBL-coding plasmids transmissibility in E. coli isolated from ambulatory patient's urina [PDF]
Representatives of the Enterobacteriaceae family are the main causative agents of urinary tract infections. Escherichia coli can exhibit resistance to [beta] -lactam antibiotics by synthesizing ESBL (extended spectrum [beta]-lactamases).

Can we prevent antimicrobial resistance by using antimicrobials better? [PDF]
Since their development over 60 years ago, antimicrobials have become an integral part of healthcare practice worldwide. Recently, this has been put in jeopardy by the emergence of widespread antimicrobial resistance, which is one of the major problems ...
