Cefonicid: A stable .BETA.-lactamase inhibitor.
The stability of cefonicid (SK&F 75073) towards representatives of six major classes of beta-lactamases was determined using a spectrophotometric assay. Cefonicid was stable to hydrolysis by the Type I enzyme from Enterobacter cloacae and by the enzyme from the anaerobe, Bacteroides fragilis. It was 6 to 7 times more stable than cefamandole to the Type

ABSTRACT Background Self‐expandable metal stents (SEMS) are often used for preoperative biliary drainage in pancreatoduodenectomy (PD); however, their impact on postoperative intra‐abdominal infection (POAI) remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of SEMS in relation to POAI.

Effect of pH on activities of novel beta-lactamases and beta-lactamase inhibitors against these beta-lactamases [PDF]
The effects of acidic conditions on activities of seven beta-lactamases--TEM-1 (class A), KOXY (class A), IMP-1 (class B), AmpC (class C), MOX-1 (class C), OXA-5 (class D), and PSE-2 (class D)--and their inhibitors were measured. The enzymatic activities of KOXY, IMP-1, and MOX-1 at pH 5.8 were slightly lower than those at pH 7.5.

Repurposing of Meropenem and Nadifloxacin for Treatment of Burn Patients? [PDF]
The escalating number of multidrug resistant pathogens has demanded the swift development of new and potent antibiotics (ref. 2). Metallo-[beta]-lactamases (MBLs) continue to evolve, rendering the latest generation of carbapenem antibiotics useless (ref.

Social interactions in the Burkholderia cepacia complex : biofilms and quorum sensing [PDF]
Burkholderia cepacia complex bacteria are opportunistic pathogens that cause respiratory tract infections in susceptible patients, mainly people with cystic fibrosis. There is convincing evidence that B.

Aims Amoxicillin, a widely used β‐lactam antibiotic, requires improved pharmacokinetic characterization during breastfeeding. This study used a population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) approach to model amoxicillin concentrations in breast milk, identify variability sources and estimate infant exposure, applying worst‐case scenarios.

Identification of group specific motifs in Beta-lactamase family of proteins
Background Beta-lactamases are one of the most serious threats to public health. In order to combat this threat we need to study the molecular and functional diversity of these enzymes and identify signatures specific to these enzymes.

Consumption of antibiotics within ambulatory care in Malta [PDF]
Background: Antibiotic use is recognised as the most important driver for the development of antimicrobial resistance in community pathogens. Surveillance is therefore critical for improvement programmes.
