Betaine squarate, a new ferroelastic betaine compound

Abstract A new betaine compound, (CH 3 ) 3 NCH 2 COO·C 4 O 4 H 2 , has been synthesized. The substance crystallizes at ambient temperature with space group Pc 2 1 b . Accordingly, it is pyro- and piezoelectric. Elastic, optic, and dielectric investigations have shown that betaine squarate under-goes a continuous ferroelastic transition at T c ≈

Anticonvulsant Properties of Betaine

Summary: It has been shown previously that convulsions induced by homocysteine are blocked by betaine. In the present study, betaine was found to block the induction of convulsions by electroconvulsive shock and by pentylenetetrazol at least as effectively as it blocked convulsions induced by homocysteine.

Aerial parts of 38 taxa, distributed in 21 genera and all three subfamilies of the Bromeliaceae have been examined for the presence of betaines. Glycinebetaine and trigonelline were isolated from all the plants studied, although the yields of both compounds were low.
