An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Establishing a genomic radiation-age association for space exploration supplements lung disease differentiation

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health, 2023
PurposeOne possible way to quantify each individual's response or damage from ionizing radiation is to estimate their accelerated biological age following exposure.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Through the Lens of Age: Using Dog Photographs to Uncover Welfare and Stress

open access: yesPets
This study evaluated the potential of using dogs’ apparent age, judged from photographs, as a non-invasive tool for assessing their welfare. Traditional welfare assessment methods often rely on behavioral and physiological indicators, which can be ...

Investigation of temperature dependence of development and aging [PDF]

open access: yes, 1969
Temperature dependence of maturation and metabolic rates in insects, and the failure of vital processes during development were investigated. The paper presented advances the general hypothesis that aging in biological systems is a consequence of the ...

Sympatric speciation in an age-structured population living on a lattice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A square lattice is introduced into the Penna model for biological aging in order to study the evolution of diploid sexual populations under certain conditions when one single locus in the individual's genome is considered as identifier of species.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Association of ultra-processed foods with phenotypic age acceleration in US adults: a mediation analysis of body mass index in the NHANES

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition
BackgroundThe rising intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has been linked to adverse health outcomes, yet its impact on aging acceleration remains unclear.ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine the association between the percentage of total daily ...

The aging-disease false dichotomy: understanding senescence as pathology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
From a biological perspective aging (senescence) appears to be a form of complex disease syndrome, though this is not the traditional view. This essay aims to foster a realistic understanding of aging by scrutinizing ideas old and new.
