Volumetric mass transfer and dilution rate as key parameters for sustainable industrial syngas fermentation to isopropyl alcohol: modeling and parametric assessment

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Synthesis gas fermentation is a promising route for the valorization of steel mill off‐gas and for replacing conventional fossil‐based isopropyl alcohol (IPA) production. A recent 120 L pilot‐scale study reported 85% gas conversion at 90% product selectivity and claimed a negative global warming potential (GWP) without detailed process design.

Sustainable and cost‐effective process design for energy‐self‐sufficient ethyl lactate production from sugar mill feedstocks: a techno‐economic approach

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Bio‐based ethyl lactate (EL) can replace several fossil‐derived products owing to its low toxicity, high solvent functionality, and environmental advantages. This study assesses the techno‐economic viability and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction potential of producing EL from sugarcane A‐molasses and lignocelluloses in an energy self‐sufficient ...

Sustainable recovery of a chitin–glucan complex–protein biocomposite from yeast biomass using biocompatible ionic liquids

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Chitin–glucan complex (CGC) is typically extracted from fungal or yeast biomass using harsh alkaline treatments that not only generate high‐salt, organic‐rich effluents, but also negatively impact the structural and functional properties of the recovered copolymer, while wasting the yeast protein fraction, which is discarded.

Insights from meta‐analysis for efficient docosahexaenoic acid production in thraustochytrids through advanced cultivation and fermentation strategies

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract This systematic review examines strategies for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) production by thraustochytrids, focusing on cultivation techniques, fermentation technologies, and carbon/nitrogen optimization to increase productivity. Among 169 eligible articles, the 100 most productive studies (0.7–10.3 g DHA L−1 per day) were analyzed. Quantitative

Valorization of fishing industry by‐products for biodiesel production: Unlocking the potential of residual fish oil

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Fishing waste and its by‐products, whether naturally occurring or generated by the processing industry, represent a significant opportunity for producing high‐value products. These often discarded or underutilized residues can be converted into various valuable products through advanced processing technologies. Among the potential products are
