Coumarins and Their Derivatives in Animal Models of Asthma: A Systematic Review. [PDF]

open access: yesBasic Clin Pharmacol Toxicol
Mast cells drive early allergic asthma by releasing histamine, interleukins and prostaglandins, causing airway hyperresponsiveness, mucus overproduction and inflammation. These events sustain symptoms and promote structural remodelling, contributing to the progression of the disease.

Potentially Overlooked Risk for Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Children: Montelukast Treatment. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Paediatr Child Health
ABSTRACT Background Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist commonly used in allergic diseases. In this study, we investigated the frequency, severity and risk factors for neuropsychiatric side effects and sleep disorders associated with montelukast in children.

Evaluation of the reproducibility of responses to nasal allergen challenge and effects of inhaled nasal corticosteroids

open access: yesClinical &Experimental Allergy, Volume 53, Issue 11, Page 1187-1197, November 2023., 2023
Nasal allergen challenge induces reproducible nasal symptoms and biomarkers reflecting early and late phase allergy responses and, depending on the endpoint, is suitable for assessing pharmacodynamic activity and proof of mechanism for drugs targeting allergic inflammation.

The Multifarious Functions of Leukotrienes in Bone Metabolism

open access: yesJournal of Bone and Mineral Research, Volume 38, Issue 8, Page 1135-1153, August 2023., 2023
Bone profile of 5‐LO–deficient mouse model. We investigated the effects of leukotrienes on bone metabolism using a 5‐LO KO mouse model. Long bones phenotype of females and males lacking 5‐LO present thicker cortical bone and increased marrow area but decreased trabecular bone only in females.

Blockade of MIF biological activity ameliorates house dust mite‐induced allergic airway inflammation in humanized MIF mice

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 37, Issue 8, August 2023., 2023
CATT7 and WT mice received HDM challenge, which enters through the damaged epithelium resulting in an increase in goblet cell hyperplasia, airway remodeling, eosinophilia, cellular infiltration, Th2 cytokine production, and airway resistance. High human MIF expressing CATT7 mice present a more severe phenotype compared to WT mice.

Asthma‐inducing potential of 28 substances in spray cleaning products—Assessed by quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) testing and literature review

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, Volume 42, Issue 1, Page 130-153, January 2022., 2022
Abstract Exposure to spray cleaning products constitutes a potential risk for asthma induction. We set out to review whether substances in such products are potential inducers of asthma. We identified 101 spray cleaning products for professional use. Twenty‐eight of their chemical substances were selected.

Uncovering the Role of Oxidative Imbalance in the Development and Progression of Bronchial Asthma

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways related to epithelial damage, bronchial hyperresponsiveness to contractile agents, tissue remodeling, and luminal narrowing. Currently, there are many data about the pathophysiology of asthma; however, a new aspect has emerged related to the influence of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS ...

Th2 cytokines and asthma The role of interleukin-5 in allergic eosinophilic disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Interleukin-5 is produced by a number of cell types, and is responsible for the maturation and release of eosinophils in the bone marrow. In humans, interleukin-5 is a very selective cytokine as a result of the restricted expression of the interleukin-5 ...

Cysteinyl Leukotriene Receptor-1 Antagonists as Modulators of Innate Immune Cell Function

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, 2014
Cysteinyl leukotrienes (cysLTs) are produced predominantly by cells of the innate immune system, especially basophils, eosinophils, mast cells, and monocytes/macrophages. Notwithstanding potent bronchoconstrictor activity, cysLTs are also proinflammatory
