Emerging and novel functions of complement protein C1q

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2015
Complement protein C1q, the recognition subcomponent of the classical pathway, performs a diverse range of complement and non-complement functions. It can bind various ligands derived from self, non-self and altered-self and modulate the functions of ...

Complement protein C1q stimulates hyaluronic acid degradation via gC1qR/HABP1/p32 in malignant pleural mesothelioma

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2023
Complement component C1q can act as a pro-tumorigenic factor in the tumor microenvironment (TME). The TME in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is rich in C1q and hyaluronic acid (HA), whose interaction enhances adhesion, migration and proliferation of

Complement protein C1q interacts with DC-SIGN via its globular domain, and thus may interfere with HIV-1 transmission [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Dendritic Cells (DCs) are the most potent antigen presenting cells capable of priming naïve T cells. Its C-type lectin receptor, DC-SIGN, regulates a wide range of immune functions.

Evidence for C1q-mediated crosslinking of CD33/LAIR-1 inhibitory immunoreceptors and biological control of CD33/LAIR-1 expression

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
C1q collagen-like region (CLR) engaging and activating the LAIR-1 inhibitory immunoreceptor represents a non-complement mechanism for maintaining immune quiescence.

Clinical impact of complement (C1q, C3d) binding De Novo donor-specific HLA antibody in kidney transplant recipients. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
INTRODUCTION:Complement binding activity of donor-specific HLA antibodies (DSA) has been suggested as a new tool to stratify immunologic risk in kidney transplantation (KT).

Glomerular deposition of C1q and anti-C1q antibodies in mice following injection of antimouse C1q antibodies

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Immunology, 2003
SUMMARY Anti-C1q autoantibodies are present in the serum of patients with different autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The occurrence of these autoantibodies correlates with renal involvement. In the present study we examined whether injection of rabbit antimouse C1q antibodies in mice leads to deposition in ...

Complement C3 mediates adolescent social isolation‐induced hippocampal synaptic deficits and sex‐specific emotional dysfunction

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
Adolescent social isolation disrupts hippocampal function and exacerbates emotional symptoms, with sex‐specific patterns, as shown by human studies. In mice, social isolation decreased hippocampal synaptic density and calcium signaling, upregulated complement proteins, and activated complement‐mediated microglial synaptic phagocytosis.

C1q, Autoimmunity and Apoptosis

open access: yesImmunobiology, 2002
Deficiency of classical pathway complement components displays a hierarchical association with the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Individuals with deficiency of C1q, the first component of the classical pathway of activation, have the highest prevalence of SLE and the most severe manifestations of the disease. However, complement is

An Open‐Label Phase 1b Study of the Safety, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Clinical Activity of ANX005 in Patients with Huntington's Disease

open access: yesMovement Disorders, EarlyView.
Complement activation is implicated in Huntington's disease; ANX005 is a potent inhibitor of component C1q. ANX005 exhibited a generally manageable safety profile with rapid reduction in C1q in the cerebrospinal fluid. Functional ability on composite Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale and total functional capacity was maintained, with potential ...
