Ca2+ homeostasis in unstimulated platelets.
Unstimulated platelets maintain a low cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration and a steep plasma membrane Ca2+ gradient. The mechanisms that are required have not been completely defined. In the present studies, 45Ca2+ was used to examine the kinetics of Ca2+ exchange in intact unstimulated platelets.

Transcription-independent effects of TGF-B on mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis [PDF]
The rapid response of mitochondria to cellular Ca2+ signals depends on their close proximity to the ER, allowing them to sense microdomains of high [Ca2+] meeting the low affinity of the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter (MCU) of the inner membrane.

We demonstrate a novel therapy for traumatic brain injury TBI using a LIPUS‐responsive Piezoelectric fibrous membrane. It targets microglial mitochondria via in situ electrical signals, restoring homeostasis and reducing oxidative stress to promote an anti‐inflammatory M2 phenotype.

Increased myocardial SERCA expression in early type 2 diabetes mellitus is insulin dependent: In vivo and in vitro data [PDF]
Background: Calcium (Ca2+) handling proteins are known to play a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of cardiomyopathy. However little is known about early changes in the diabetic heart and the impact of insulin treatment (Ins).

Organoid Brain‐Machine‐Interface Devices for Central Nervous System Repair
We envision organoid brain‐machine‐interface (Organoid‐BMI) devices as new biohybrid bidirectional communication pathways to connect the human CNS and the external world for personalized CNS repair and regeneration. ABSTRACT Central nervous system (CNS) repair and regeneration suffer from tremendous clinical challenges due to current limitations in ...

Palatable food alleviates stress and prevents anxiety. This study uncovers a dedicated neural pathway: dopamine release in the PFC activates D1R neurons, whose projections to the peri‐PVN engage a population of anxiolytic CRFR1 neurons. These neurons then inhibit stress‐induced hyperactivity of PVNCRF neurons, providing a circuit‐level explanation for ...

An ultrasound‐activatable piezoelectric hydrogel reprograms chondrocyte mitochondrial epigenetics via the mTOR/GATD3A axis, clearing damaged mitochondria and alleviating osteoarthritis progression in both mouse models and human cartilage explants. ABSTRACT The avascular nature of cartilage hinders drug delivery for osteoarthritis (OA) therapy.

Cellular calcium (Ca2+)-regulating systems are compromised during aging-related disorders. Here, we show that disruption of Ca2+ homeostasis leads to the cytoplasmic accumulation of Ca2+ binding protein S100A6, which promotes Hutchinson-Gilford progeria ...

Dysregulation of Ca2+ homeostasis is considered to contribute to the toxic action of the Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) associated Amyloid-β-peptide (Aβ). Ca2+ fluxes across the plasma membrane and release from intracellular stores have both been reported to ...

The Plasmodium berghei Ca(2+)/H(+) exchanger, PbCAX, is essential for tolerance to environmental Ca(2+) during sexual development. [PDF]
Ca(2+) contributes to a myriad of important cellular processes in all organisms, including the apicomplexans, Plasmodium and Toxoplasma. Due to its varied and essential roles, free Ca(2+) is tightly regulated by complex mechanisms.
