Calcitonin (CT) is a peptide that is synthesized in the mammalian thyroid gland as well as the central nervous system, reproductive organs, liver, kidney, and elsewhere. Its receptor is found in many mammalian cell types and tissues, and CT is a potent inhibitor of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption.

Calcitonin and phosphate

This report summarizes the relationship of calcitonin to phosphate. The hypocalcemic action of calcitonin is dependent upon phosphate, while the hypophosphatemic action is independent of calcium. Calcitonin moves phosphate into bone cells and bone fluid in contrast to reducing the movement of calcium from bone to blood.

Nasal calcitonin is a newly approved treatment for established osteoporosis that increases lumbar spine bone mass, is safe, and well tolerated. Fracture efficacy data is not yet available, although preliminary results are promising. The dose for established osteoporosis is 200 IU.
