Calcitonin (CT) is a peptide that is synthesized in the mammalian thyroid gland as well as the central nervous system, reproductive organs, liver, kidney, and elsewhere. Its receptor is found in many mammalian cell types and tissues, and CT is a potent inhibitor of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption.

This report summarizes the relationship of calcitonin to phosphate. The hypocalcemic action of calcitonin is dependent upon phosphate, while the hypophosphatemic action is independent of calcium. Calcitonin moves phosphate into bone cells and bone fluid in contrast to reducing the movement of calcium from bone to blood.

Nasal calcitonin is a newly approved treatment for established osteoporosis that increases lumbar spine bone mass, is safe, and well tolerated. Fracture efficacy data is not yet available, although preliminary results are promising. The dose for established osteoporosis is 200 IU.

Calcitonin and calcitonin receptors.
Clinical cases in mineral and bone metabolism : the official journal of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism, and Skeletal Diseases, 2012Calcitonin (CT) is a polypeptide hormone with 32 aminoacids syntetized primarily by the thyroid.Several evidences support the existence of nonthyroidal CT like peptide. The CT gene transcript also encodes a distinct peptide known as calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) which is a potent vasodilator and responsible for the stimulation of the ...

Estrogen deficiency is thought to be the main factor leading to postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO). A role for calcitonin (CT) has been proposed as mediator of estrogen action on bone, and therefore, as pathogenetic factor of PMO. However, this hypothesis is still controversial.

Calcitonin, whatever its origin, produces a decrease in the renal tubular reabsorption of sodium, phosphate and calcium in man and in the rat. Renal receptors for calcitonin have been demonstrated in the membranes of rat tubular cells using 125I salmon calcitonin as a tracer.

Calcitonin has a specific role in prevention and treatment of osteoporotic fractures. Calcitonin is a hormone that is synthesized and secreted by the thyroid gland. The circulating level of ionized calcium controls calcitonin release. Treatment of osteoporosis with calcitonin was approved by the FDA in 1985 (Fatourechi & Health, 1987).

Regulation of Calcitonin Secretion and Calcitonin Gene Expression
1992Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a tumor of the calcitonin (CT)-secreting cells (C-cells or parafollicular cells). During embryogenesis C-cells migrate from the neural crest to the last branchial pouch and ultimately into the thyroid. In contrast to the follicular cells of the thyroid gland that produce the thyroid hormones under the control of ...
