Synthesis of 1-indolyl-3,5,8-substituted γ-carbolines: one-pot solvent-free protocol and biological evaluation

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2021
1,5-Disubstituted indole-2-carboxaldehyde derivatives 1a–h and glycine alkyl esters 2a–c are shown to undergo a novel cascade imination-heterocylization in the presence of the organic base DIPEA to provide 1-indolyl-3,5,8-substituted γ-carbolines 3aa–ea ...

Development in the Synthesis and Biological Activities of THβ-carboline and Its Analogs: Review

open access: yesEthiopian Journal of Science and Sustainable Development, 2022
1,2,3,4-Tetrahydro-β-carbolines (THβCs) are a large group of natural and synthetic indole alkaloids that possess a common tricyclic pyrido[3,4-b] indole scaffold that are widely distributed in nature.

β-Carboline (norharman) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section C Crystal Structure Communications, 2011
The structure of β-carboline, also called norharman (systematic name: 9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole), C(11)H(8)N(2), has been determined at 110 K. Norharman is prevalent in the environment and the human body and is of wide biological interest. The structure exhibits intermolecular N-H···N hydrogen bonding, which results in a one-dimensional herringbone motif.

Tricyclic Imidazolidin-4-ones by Witkop Oxidation of Tetrahydro-β-carbolines

open access: yes, 2020
1-Substituted and 1,1-disubstituted tetrahydro-β-carbolines undergo sodium periodate oxidative ring expansion in the presence of formaldehyde and other aldehydes to form 5,6-dihydro-7H-1,4-methanobenzo[e][1,4]diazonine-2,7(3H)-diones in 30–81% yield.

Bioactivity of selected materials for coffee substitute. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Epidemiological studies have suggested that coffee consumption is negatively correlated with the incidence of Parkinson's disease. Coffee contains relatively high levels of β-carbolines, which have been ascribed neuroactive effects in humans however the ...

2-(2,5-Dimethoxyphenyl)pyrrole-3-carbonitrile

open access: yesMolbank, 2023
The Cadogan reaction of 2-aryl-3-nitropyridines leads to δ-carbolines. The title compound is a side product in this reaction, generated via a ring opening of a nitrene and cyclization. A crystal structure analysis gives an enormous unit cell.

Cytotoxic Bis-3,4-dihydro-β-carbolines and Bis-β-carbolines [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Enzyme Inhibition and Medicinal Chemistry, 2002
Ten bis-beta-carboline 1, 2 and bis-3,4-dihydro-beta-carboline 3, 4 derivatives, linked between carbons 1 and 1' by a polymethylene spacer, were synthesized from bistryptamine amides 9, 10. Some of them display a micromolar IC50 towards L-1210 cells.

Expanding the scope of the Bohlmann-Rahtz reaction: new routes to 3-nitropyridines, ?-carbolines, and ß-carbolines

open access: yes, 2022
Chapter One opens with an overview of the role of pyridines in the pharmaceutical industry. This is followed by an in-depth survey of literature methods that have been reported for pyridine synthesis, including the Bohlmann-Rahtz reaction.
