Studies on galactosyl ceramide and lactosyl ceramide β-galactosidase

Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 1974
Abstract Galactosyl ceramide and lactosyl ceramide β-galactosidase activity was measured in extracts of previously frozen human brain. Using the assay methods described here, both galactosyl ceramide and lactosyl ceramide gave Michaelis constants of about 20 μM.

Ceramide synthesis in the epidermis

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular and Cell Biology of Lipids, 2014
The epidermis and in particular its outermost layer the stratum corneum provides terrestrial vertebrates with a pivotal defensive barrier against water loss, xenobiotics and harmful pathogens. A vital demand for this epidermal permeability barrier is the lipid-enriched lamellar matrix that embeds the enucleated corneocytes.

Enzymatic synthesis of ceramide

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1966
Abstract An enzyme which catalyzes the biosynthesis of ceramides ( N -acylsphingosines) from sphingosine and acyl-CoA derivatives has been found in chicken liver, rat brain, and guinea-pig brain. The specificity of this enzyme toward sphingosine isomers has been investigated.

A facile synthesis of ceramides

Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 1975
Abstract A new simple procedure for the synthesis of ceramide from free fatty acid and sphingosine by oxidation-reduction condensation with triphenylphosphine and 2,2′-dipyridyldisulfide has been described. N-lignoceroyl and N-cerebronoyl sphingosine were synthesized with this procedure producing an overall yield of 74% from lignoceric acid and 64 ...
