Effect Of Exogenous Cholesterol And Dithiothreitol On The Activity Of Human Liver Microsomal Acyl-Coenzyme A:Cholesterol Acyltransferase (ACAT) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
esterification of cholesterol with long-chain fatty acyl-CoA derivatives and has been implicated in atherosclerosis and gallstone disease. The effects of exogenous cholesterol and dithiothreitol (DTT) on the ACAT activity of human liver microsomes have ...

High cholesterol absorption efficiency interferes with bile acid metabolism and cholesterol elimination from the body

open access: yesJournal of Internal Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Elevated low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol causes atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Variables of whole‐body cholesterol metabolism, for example, high cholesterol absorption efficiency, might also be atherogenic, whereas the role of bile acids is controversial.

Association of the A-204C polymorphism in the cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase gene with variations in plasma low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in the Framingham Offspring Study

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1999
The first reaction of the catabolic pathway of cholesterol is catalyzed by CYP7 and serves as the rate-limiting step and major site of regulation of bile acid synthesis in the liver.

Endogenous oestrogens as neuroprotective modulators in the human retina: Evidence from transcriptomic profiling and aromatase inhibition

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 38, Issue 4, April 2026.
Single‐cell transcriptomics reveals that the human retina expresses a broad repertoire of steroid hormone biosynthesis and estrogen signalling genes. Functional validation in retinal explants shows that local estrogen synthesis is neuroprotective, preventing photoreceptor death and limiting microglial activation. Abstract Steroid hormones, particularly

Regulation of 25- and 27-hydroxylation side chain cleavage pathways for cholic acid biosynthesis in humans, rabbits, and mice: assay of enzyme activities by high-resolution gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2000
: In classic cholic acid biosynthesis, a series of ring modifications of cholesterol precede side chain cleavage and yield 5β-cholestane-3α, 7α, 12α-triol.

Mathematically modelling the dynamics of cholesterol metabolism and ageing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the UK. This conditionbecomes increasingly prevalent during ageing; 34.1% and 29.8% of males and females respectively, over 75years of age have an underlying cardiovascular ...

ORMDL Proteins Turnover via Proteasome and Autophagy Is Cell‐Type Dependent and Tied to Ceramide Homeostasis

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 6, 31 March 2026.
ORMDL proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) negatively regulate serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT) activity in response to the rate of de novo sphingolipid synthesis. Disruption of ceramide homeostasis by myriocin or fumonisin B1 (FB1) appears to destabilize the ORMDL‐SPT complex, leading to ORMDL degradation as a feedback mechanism.

Biochemical site of regulation of bile acid biosynthesis in the rat

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1970
The production of bile salts by rat liver is regulated by a feedback mechanism, but it is not known which enzyme controls endogenous bile acid synthesis.

Dose-Dependent Cholesterolemic Activity of Tocotrienols and α-Tocopherol [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Tocotrienols and tocopherols are isoforms of vitamin E. Vitamin E may exhibit antioxidant, prooxidant and non-antioxidant activities depending upon circumstances.

Investigation of hepatocyte signaling pathways in chronic kidney disease : clinical and experimental studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined as a loss of renal function from any cause and lasting for more than three months. The CKD phenotype is similar across multiple etiologies, suggesting that renal damage itself is a dominant factor. Thus, regardless
