Cation and water channel properties of claudin-2 co-expressed with claudin-1 or claudin-3

Claudins are considered the backbone of the tight junctions (TJ), sealing the gap between two adjacent cells and preventing the passage of solutes across epithelia. Interestingly, claudin-2 (Cldn2) forms channels at the TJ that allow the paracellular passage of cations and water.
