Colistin (polymyxin E) is a positively charged deca-peptide antibiotic that disrupts the integrity of the outer membrane of the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria by binding to the lipid A moiety of lipopolysaccharides, resulting in cell death. The endotoxic activity of lipopolysaccharides is simultaneously inhibited.

Old drug, new findings: colistin resistance and dependence of [PDF]
Colistin is an old drug, and its use has recently resurged because of increasing antibiotic resistance in gram-negative bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii.

Colistin Dependency among Colistin-Heteroresistant Acinetobacter baumannii Isolates
Colistin dependent (CD) isolates are dependent on colistin for optimal growth. Here we aimed to systematically determine the emergence of CD among colistin-heteroresistant carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) isolates. We also examined the

Colistin, which targets lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is used as a last-resort drug against severe infections caused by drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. However, A. baumannii possesses two colistin-resistance mechanisms.

Role of efflux pumps, their inhibitors, and regulators in colistin resistance
Colistin is highly promising against multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant bacteria clinically. Bacteria are resistant to colistin mainly through mcr and chromosome-mediated lipopolysaccharide (LPS) synthesis-related locus variation. However,

Introduction: Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen worldwide. In Thailand, the incidence and mortality rate of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB) is continuously increasing. This organism is a common pathogen that

Development of colistin resistance via heteroresistance modeling in : A diagnostic study [PDF]
Purpose Colistin heteroresistance mediates the failure of antibiotic treatments, is prone to lead to colistin resistance, and has been frequently reported in Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Background: Polymyxins (colistin) have emerged for the treatment of carbapenem resistant (CR) gram-negative infections. There is a paucity of data on treatment outcomes and adverse effects of high-dose colistin treatment in Pakistan.
