MCR: modern colistin resistance [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, 2016
Recently, plasmid-mediated and, therefore, transferable bacterial polymyxin resistance was discovered in strains from both humans and animals. Such a trait may widely spread geographically, while simultaneously crossing microbial species barriers. This may ultimately render the "last resort" polymyxin antibiotics therapeutically useless.

Deciphering MCR-2 Colistin Resistance [PDF]

open access: yesmBio, 2017
ABSTRACT Antibiotic resistance is a prevalent problem in public health worldwide. In general, the carbapenem β-lactam antibiotics are considered a final resort against lethal infections by multidrug-resistant bacteria. Colistin is a cationic polypeptide antibiotic and acts as the last line of defense for treatment of carbapenem ...

Mobile colistin resistance (mcr) genes and recent developments in colistin resistance detection

open access: yesLetters in Applied Microbiology, 2023
Abstract The peptide antibiotic colistin has been reserved as a last resort antibiotic treatment option for cases where other antibiotics including carbapenems have failed. Recent emergence of colistin resistance and discovery of mobile colistin resistance (mcr) genes, which encode the cell wall modifying phosphoethanolamine transferase ...

Transition of colistin dependence into colistin resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
AbstractWe recently demonstrated a high rate of colistin dependence in Acinetobacter baumannii isolates exposed to colistin in vitro. In the present study, we obtained a colistin-resistant (H08-391R) and colistin-dependent mutant (H08-391D) from a colistin-susceptible parental strain (H08-391). We found that the colistin-dependent mutant converted into

A Resistance Mechanism in Non-mcr Colistin-Resistant Escherichia coli in Taiwan: R81H Substitution in PmrA Is an Independent Factor Contributing to Colistin Resistance

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2021
Colistin resistance due to the mcr-type genes in Escherichia coli is well characterized. In order to study the resistance mechanism in mcr-negative colistin-resistant E.

Nonclonal Emergence of Colistin Resistance Associated with Mutations in the BasRS Two-Component System in Escherichia coli Bloodstream Isolates

open access: yesmSphere, 2020
Infections by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria are increasingly common, prompting the renewed interest in the use of colistin. Colistin specifically targets Gram-negative bacteria by interacting with the anionic lipid A moieties of ...

Colistin-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii: Beyond Carbapenem Resistance [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 2015
With an increase in the use of colistin methansulfonate (CMS) to treat carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infections, colistin resistance is emerging.Patients with infection or colonization due to colistin-resistant A. baumannii were identified at a hospital system in Pennsylvania. Clinical data were collected from electronic medical records.

Circumventing colistin resistance by combining colistin and antimicrobial peptides to kill colistin-resistant and multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria

open access: yesJournal of Global Antimicrobial Resistance, 2020
Colistin is a 'last-line' antibiotic used to treat multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, but colistin resistance has emerged. Colistin normally binds to the lipid A moiety on the bacterial outer membrane, where it then destroys the bacterial membrane.

Global Burden of Colistin-Resistant Bacteria: Mobilized Colistin Resistance Genes Study (1980–2018) [PDF]

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2019
Colistin is considered to be an antimicrobial of last-resort for the treatment of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. The recent global dissemination of mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) genes is an urgent public health threat. An accurate estimate of the global prevalence of mcr genes, their reservoirs and the potential pathways ...

Synergistic Activity of Colistin-Containing Combinations against Colistin-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae [PDF]

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 2018
Resistance to colistin, a polypeptide drug used as an agent of last resort for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Gram-negative bacteria, including carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), severely limits treatment options and may even transform
