DojoIBL: Nurturing Communities of Inquiry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This paper presents and outlines the demonstration of DojoIBL, a web-based platform that aims at nurturing communities of inquiry by supporting communication and collaboration with emerging technological affordances. The manuscript briefly elaborates on the theoretical underpinning of DojoIBL and describes the functionalities supported.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Teaching Presence: Co-Creating a Multi-National Online Learning Community in an Asynchronous Classroom

open access: yesOnline Learning, 2014
The pace of globalization coupled with growing institutional pursuit of online education means that online classes are increasingly composed of a multi-national, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural student body.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

COMMUNITY OF INQUIRY AND LEARNING IN IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENTS

open access: yesOnline Learning, 2019
This paper describes an exploratory, observational study using a purposive sample selection to determine if the presence indicators of the well regarded Community of Inquiry model can be a useful tool to observe and assess learning events which use a ...

Four domains of complexity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this short paper, which reflects on one of my contributions to the systems literature in 1992 (Pluralism and the Legitimation of Systems Science), I discuss the context at that time.

Developing the language of thinking within a classroom community of inquiry: pre-service teachers’ experiences [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We argue that the “community of inquiry” approach, using reading materials modelled on Lipman’s Philosophy for Children programme, is a theoretically justified and teacher-friendly means of promoting effective thinking skills.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...
