β-n-oxalyl-l-α, β -diaminopropionic acid (β -odap) content in lathyrus sativus: The integration of nitrogen and sulfur metabolism through β -cyanoalanine synthase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is an important legume crop grown mainly in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. This underutilized legume can withstand harsh environmental conditions including drought and flooding.

Autophagy is activated and involved in cell death with participation of cathepsins during stress-induced microspore embryogenesis in barley [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Microspores are reprogrammed towards embryogenesis by stress. Many microspores die after this stress, limiting the efficiency of microspore embryogenesis. Autophagy is a degradation pathway that plays critical roles in stress response and cell death.

Hydrogen Sulfide Signaling in Plants: Emerging Roles of Protein Persulfidation

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2018
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been largely referred as a toxic gas and environmental hazard, but recent years, it has emerged as an important gas-signaling molecule with effects on multiple physiological processes in both animal and plant systems.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Burning fat with cysteine depletion

open access: yesCell Stress
Removing certain essential amino acids from the diet is known to promote weight loss in rodents via effects on food intake and energy expenditure. Two complementary articles by Varghese et al [Nature 643(8072)] and Lee et al [Nature Metabolism 7(6)] now ...

Conversion of Methionine to Cysteine in Lactobacillus paracasei Depends on the Highly Mobile cysK-ctl-cysE Gene Cluster

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Milk and dairy products are rich in nutrients and are therefore habitats for various microbiomes. However, the composition of nutrients can be quite diverse, in particular among the sulfur containing amino acids.

Indirect Routes to Aminoacyl-tRNA: The Diversity of Prokaryotic Cysteine Encoding Systems

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2022
Universally present aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) stringently recognize their cognate tRNAs and acylate them with one of the proteinogenic amino acids.

Pichia pastoris Fep1 is a [2Fe-2S] protein with a Zn finger that displays an unusual oxygen-dependent role in cluster binding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Fep1, the iron-responsive GATA factor from the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris, has been characterised both in vivo and in vitro. This protein has two Cys(2)-Cys(2) type zinc fingers and a set of four conserved cysteines arranged in a Cys-X-5-Cys-X ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Multi-objective optimization of methionine+cysteine levels in diets for growing pigs

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Ciencias Pecuarias, 2020
Background: The addition of synthetic methionine to growing pig diets should consider the requirements of the methionine+cysteine complex, as most cysteine is obtained through dietary methionine.
