Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

The Effect of Nalidixic Acid Group Compounds on Reduction of Cytochrome c from Horse Heart and Candida krusei [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Microbiology, 1978
Reduction of cytochrome c from both horse heart and Candida krusei by FeSO4 has been demonstrated. This reaction was stimulated by nalidixic acid and structurally related compounds, and the effect was more pronounced for the yeast cytochrome. Divalent metal ions other than Fe2+ lessened or abolished the stimulation by these compounds.

The Conserved Mitochondrial Twin Cx9C Protein Cmc2 Is a Cmc1 Homologue Essential for Cytochrome c Oxidase Biogenesis*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2010
Mitochondrial copper metabolism and delivery to cytochrome c oxidase and mitochondrially localized CuZn-superoxide dismutase (Sod1) requires a growing number of intermembrane space proteins containing a twin Cx9C motif.

Irisin protects cardiomyocytes against hypoxia/reoxygenation injury via attenuating AMPK mediated endoplasmic reticulum stress

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress plays a central role in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Irisin has been reported to have protective properties in ischemia disease.

Tailoring the Properties of Functional Materials With N‐Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The properties of materials bearing N‐oxide groups are often dominated by the polar N+─O− bond. It provides hydrophilicity, selective ion‐binding, electric conductivity, or antifouling properties. Many of the underlying mechanisms have only recently been discovered, and the interest in N‐oxide materials is rapidly growing.

Structures and proton-pumping strategies of mitochondrial respiratory enzymes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Enzymes of the mitochondrial respiratory chain serve as proton pumps, using the energy made available from electron transfer reactions to transport protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane and create an electrochemical gradient used for the ...

Nori- and Sea Spaghetti- but not Wakame-restructured pork decrease the hypercholesterolemic and liver proapototic short-term effects of high-dietary cholesterol consumption

open access: yesNutrición Hospitalaria, 2013
Restructured pork (RP) enriched in Seaweeds are potential functional foods. The antiapoptotic and hypocholesterolemic effects of consuming cholesterol enriched diets containing Wakame-RP (CW), Nori-RP (CN) and Sea Spaghetti (CS) were tested in a 1-wk ...

Cold Atmospheric Plasma Selectively Disrupts Breast Cancer Growth in a Bioprinted 3D Tumor‐Stroma Co‐Culture Model

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This research introduces a cold plasma‐based platform for treating breast cancer bone metastases. Using a novel bioprinted 3D tumor‐stroma model, it highlights the selective antitumor effects of plasma‐generated reactive species. The platform aims to advance non‐invasive therapeutic strategies, offering potential clinical applications in controlling ...

Biogenesis of cytochrome c1 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
The biogenesis of cytochrome c1 involves a number of steps including: synthesis as a precursor with a bipartite signal sequence, transfer across the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes, removal of the first part of the presequence in the matrix ...
