It is well known that adenosine and its phosphate derivatives play a crucial role in biological phenomena such as apoptosis and cell signaling and act as the energy currency of the cell. Although their interactions with various proteins and enzymes have been described, the focus of this work is to demonstrate the effect of the phosphate group on the ...

Human P450 CYP17A1: Control of Substrate Preference by Asparagine 202 [PDF]
CYP17A1 is a key steroidogenic enzyme known to conduct several distinct chemical transformations on multiple substrates. In its hydroxylase activity, this enzyme adds a hydroxyl group at the 17α position of both pregnenolone and progesterone at ...

Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Canadine synthase from Thalictrum tuberosum cell cultures catalyses the formation of the methylenedioxy bridge in berberine synthesis [PDF]
An enzyme system catalysing the formation of the methylenedioxy bridge at ring A of (S)-canadine [ = (S)-tetrahydroberberine] from (S)-tetrahydrocolumbamine has been detected in microsomal preparations from different Ranunculaceae and Berberidaceae cell ...

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Yeast cytochrome c peroxidase. Coordination and spin states of heme prosthetic group.
Electronic absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic examinations revealed that a freshly prepared cytochrome c peroxidase (CCP) contains a penta-coordinated high spin ferric protoheme group. The penta-coordinated high spin state of fresh CCP is maintained in a remarkably wide range of pH (4-8).

Ranolazine Reduces Ca\u3csup\u3e2+\u3c/sup\u3e Overload and Oxidative Stress and Improves Mitochondrial Integrity to Protect Against Ischemia Reperfusion Injury in Isolated Hearts [PDF]
Ranolazine is a clinically approved drug for treating cardiac ventricular dysrhythmias and angina. Its mechanism(s) of protection is not clearly understood but evidence points to blocking the late Na+ current that arises during ischemia, blocking ...

Cytochrome c 6-like protein as a putative donor of electrons to photosystem I in the cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. PCC 7119 [PDF]
Most organisms performing oxygenic photosynthesis contain either cytochrome c 6 or plastocyanin, or both, to transfer electrons from cytochrome b 6-f to photosystem I. Even though plastocyanin has superseded cytochrome c 6 along evolution, plants contain

Dapagliflozin prevents methylglyoxal‐induced retinal cell death in ARPE‐19 cells
Diabetic macular oedema is a diabetes complication of the eye, which may lead to permanent blindness. ARPE‐19 are human retinal cells used to study retinal diseases and potential therapeutics. Methylglyoxal is a compound increased in uncontrolled diabetes due to elevated blood glucose.

Pentamycin Biosynthesis in Philippine Streptomyces sp. S816: Cytochrome P450-Catalyzed Installation of the C-14 Hydroxyl Group [PDF]
ABSTRACT Pentamycin is a polyene antibiotic, registered in Switzerland for the treatment of vaginal candidiasis, trichomo-niasis and mixed infections. Chemical instability has hindered its wide-spread application and development as a drug. Here we report the identification of Streptomyces
