Expanding the Hippo pathway : hMOB3 modulates apoptotic MST1 signaling and supports tumor growth in glioblastoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Protein kinases are critical players of signal transduction pathways involved in development, physiological and pathological processes. Deregulation of protein kinase signaling is found to be causal or related to varieties of human diseases, such as ...

The microbiome in human skin aging

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐related skin changes encompass the well‐known visible phenotypic alterations, together with microbiome dysbiosis and a series of molecular aging hallmarks. These hallmarks characterize not only a fully stablished aged phenotype but also the skin aging process itself.

Trafficking of protein kinases to mitochondria: Implications for ischemic stroke

open access: yesExperimental Gerontology
Stroke is a major cause of death and permanent disability, which is described by abrupt loss of neuronal energy, oxidative injury, inflammation, and apoptosis, primarily mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction.

Imatinib treatment causes substantial transcriptional changes in adult Schistosoma mansoni in vitro exhibiting pleiotropic effects. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2014
Schistosome parasites cause schistosomiasis, one of the most important infectious diseases worldwide. For decades Praziquantel (PZQ) is the only drug widely used for controlling schistosomiasis.

Genome-wide analysis to predict protein sequence variations that change phosphorylation sites or their corresponding kinases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We define phosphovariants as genetic variations that change phosphorylation sites or their interacting kinases. Considering the essential role of phosphorylation in protein functions, it is highly likely that phosphovariants change protein functions and ...

InterAKTions with FKBPs - mutational and pharmacological exploration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP51) is an Hsp90-associated co-chaperone which regulates steroid receptors and kinases. In pancreatic cancer cell lines, FKBP51 was shown to recruit the phosphatase PHLPP to facilitate dephosphorylation of the kinase Akt,

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Regulation of spinach SNF1‐related (SnRK1) kinases by protein kinases and phosphatases is associated with phosphorylation of the T loop and is regulated by 5′‐AMP

open access: yes, 1999
Summary Members of the SNF1‐related protein kinase‐1 (SnRK1) subfamily of protein kinases are higher plant homologues of mammalian AMP‐activated and yeast SNF1 protein kinases.

Ligand‐dependent transcriptional heterogeneity in cell cycle gene expression delays G1/S entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
EGF and HRG induce distinct G1/S progression programs in ErbB2‐amplified BT474 breast cancer cells. Despite activating the potent ErbB2–ErbB3 heterodimer, HRG does not accelerate cell‐cycle entry. Instead, EGF promotes earlier restriction‐point passage via ERK–FOS signaling, whereas HRG activates the AKT–MYC axis, driving transcriptional heterogeneity ...

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.
