Heart failure (HF) remains a global public health burden and often results following myocardial infarction (MI). Following injury, cardiac fibrosis forms in the myocardium which greatly hinders cellular function, survival, and recruitment, thus severely ...

Decorin Modulates Fibrin Assembly and Structure [PDF]
Emerging evidence indicates that fibrin clotting is regulated by different external factors. We demonstrated recently that decorin, a regulator of collagen fibrillogenesis and transforming growth factor-beta activity, binds to the D regions of fibrinogen (Dugan, T.A., Yang, V. W.-C., McQuillan, D.J., and Höök, M. (2003) J. Biol. Chem. 278, 13655-13662).

Proteoglycan neofunctions: regulation of inflammation and autophagy in cancer biology. [PDF]
Inflammation and autophagy have emerged as prominent issues in the context of proteoglycan signaling. In particular, two small, leucine-rich proteoglycans, biglycan and decorin, play pivotal roles in the regulation of these vital cellular pathways and ...

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the Western world. Despite tremendous strides in understandings its pathogenesis, it still remains a challenge because of gaps in our understanding of its initiation, progression and complications leading to the clinical syndromes of angina, acute coronary syndrome ...

Impact of bidirectional relationships between streptococcus anginosus group and host tissue matrix components on cellular activity: Role in establishment of infection [PDF]
This paper investigates pathogenic mechanisms of the Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) of bacteria which influence the biological activity of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells, endothelial cells and also how matrix proteins produced by these host cells ...

Decorin as a multivalent therapeutic agent against cancer. [PDF]
Decorin is a prototypical small leucine-rich proteoglycan that epitomizes the multifunctional nature of this critical gene family. Soluble decorin engages multiple receptor tyrosine kinases within the target-rich environment of the tumor stroma and tumor

Pivotal role for decorin in angiogenesis [PDF]
Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting vessels, is a highly complex process. It is regulated in a finely-tuned manner by numerous molecules including not only soluble growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor and several other growth factors, but also a diverse set of insoluble molecules, particularly ...
