Desialylation of Platelets by Pneumococcal Neuraminidase A Induces ADP-Dependent Platelet Hyperreactivity [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 2018
Platelets are increasingly recognized to play a role in the complications of Streptococcus pneumoniae infections. S. pneumoniae expresses neuraminidases, which may alter glycans on the platelet surface.

Oxidative changes and desialylation of serum proteins in hyperthyroidism

Clinica Chimica Acta, 2003
Hyperthyroidism is associated with oxidative stress. Thyroid hormones are observed to influence the metabolism of plasma proteins. The present study was carried out to explore the level of sialic acid content and the oxidative changes of serum proteins in hyperthyroid subjects and matched healthy controls.Blood was collected from 10 hyperthyroid ...

Acquired Glanzmann thrombasthenia associated with platelet desialylation

Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2020
The notable discrepancy between platelet count and bleeding manifestations in immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) patients with acquired Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) has been described. We aimed to examine the mechanisms responsible for thrombocytopenia and the bleeding phenotype in a patient with acquired GT.A patient with primary ITP underwent splenectomy ...

Clearance of circulating desialylated thyroglobulins in the rat

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 1979
Canine and rat thyroglobulins were labeled with 125I either in vitro or in vivo, and were utilized for plasma clearance studies performed with rat. The half-life of physiologically radioiodinated asialothyroglobulins was about 6 min, while that of chemically radioiodinated asialothyroglobulin was about 12 min.

Metabolism of Intact and Desialylated α1-Antitrypsin

Clinical Science, 1978
1. To study the metabolism of α1-antitrypsin in man, radioiodinated purified α1-antitrypsin of protease inhibitor type MM was injected intravenously into seven normal volunteer subjects of protease inhibitor type MM and plasma and urine radioactivity data were analysed.

Consensus protocol for platelet desialylation (β-galactose exposure) quantification using lectins by flow cytometry: communication from the ISTH SSC Subcommittee on Platelet Physiology

open access: yesJournal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis
Background: Platelets contain many heterogeneous carbohydrates (glycans), often capped by sialic acid. The removal of sialic acid (desialylation) is important for platelet function and clearance, leading to novel diagnostic markers.

Desialylated low density lipoproteins and atherosclerosis

1992
Oxidative modification of LDL is accompanied by a number of compositional and structural changes, now well known. In addition, other atherogenic modifications of LDL exist, such as desialylation. The present article summarizes the recent data related to desialylated LDL and to the presence of these LDL in blood plasma of patients with coronary ...

Desialylation of fibrinogen with neuraminidase. Kinetic and clotting studies

Thrombosis Research, 1982
The removal, with time, of sialic acid residues from human fibrinogen by neuraminidase, can be explained, as a result of a mathematical analysis, by the summation of two first order reactions with clearly different rate constants. Quantitative studies on the bound sialic acid to isolated fibrinogen chains, after reduction and alkylation of the ...
