IqgC is a RasGAP from Dictyostelium discoideum. IqgC binds RasG via its RasGAP domain and deactivates it on macroendocytic cups, thereby suppressing the uptake of fluid and particles. IqgC has a positive effect on cell‐substratum adhesion, and its RGCt domain is required for recruitment to ventral foci.

Visualizing mitochondria in living Dictyostelium discoideum cells using fluorescent dyes is often problematic due to variability in staining, metabolism of the dyes, and unknown potential effects of the dyes on mitochondrial function.

Highlights of the FEBS3+ meeting Exploring molecular frontiers
FEBS+ meeting Exploring molecular frontiers, held in Pula, Croatia, in autumn 2024 was jointly organized by the Croatian, Finnish, and Swedish Member Societies of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS). The congress covered a wide variety of different biochemical themes, some of the highlights of which are presented in this ‘In the ...

Amino acid repeats cause extraordinary coding sequence variation in the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum. [PDF]
Protein sequences are normally the most conserved elements of genomes owing to purifying selection to maintain their functions. We document an extraordinary amount of within-species protein sequence variation in the model eukaryote Dictyostelium ...

Protein tandem repeats that produce frameshifts can generate new structural states and functions
We explored an alternative protein structure landscape by analyzing amino acid sequences from frameshifted tandem repeats—regions prone to frameshifts. These frameshifts, especially in short repeats, lead to more drastic changes than in non‐repetitive regions, often altering structure, function, localization, and potentially contributing to disease ...

The loss of function of DJ-1 caused by mutations in DJ1 causes a form of familial Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the role of DJ-1 in healthy and in PD cells is poorly understood. Even its subcellular localization in mammalian cells is uncertain, with

CHROMOSOME REARRANGEMENTS IN DICTYOSTELIUM DISCOIDEUM [PDF]
ABSTRACT A tandem duplication (D350(III,III)) of the whiB to radB interval of linkage group III has been characterized. The gene order on the duplication-bearing chromosome is: centromere, whiB500, radB+, whiB+, radB24, bsgA5, acrC4. Slow-growing, duplication-bearing strains (yellow-spored, radiation-resistant) produced four classes of ...
