Lipid‐Lowering Potential of Food Formulations Based on Culinary‐Treated Flours of Dioscorea bulbifera (Dana) in Obese and Hyperlipidemic Rats

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, Volume 4, Issue 1, Page 233-246, January 2026.
This graphical abstract highlights the nutritional management of obesity through food formulations based on the two varieties (white and black) of Dioscorea bulbifera yams that has undergone culinary treatments (boiling and braising). The results show that white Dioscorea bulbifera showed the best properties compared to black after the culinary ...

Comparative Profiling of Capsicum frutescens and C. annuum Reveals Superior Bioactivities and Nutritional Advantages for Functional Food Applications

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 1, January 2026.
Systematic bioactivity profiling revealed C. frutescens demonstrated significantly superior radical scavenging capacity (DPPH IC50: 111.96 ± 3.24 μg/mL; 2.5‐fold enhancement, p < 0.001), enhanced broad‐spectrum antibacterial efficacy (zone diameters: 8–22 mm), and notable cytotoxic activity meeting NCI preliminary criteria (LC50: 29.24 ± 1.15 μg/mL ...

Production of diosgenin by hairy root cultures of Trigonella foenum-graecum L [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Hairy root cultures ofTrigonella foenum-graecum L. were established withAgrobacterium rhizogenes strain A4. The hairy roots produce diosgenin, an important spirostanol for the semi-synthesis of steroid hormones.

Effects of Diosgenin on Myometrial Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 and -9 Activity and Expression in Ovariectomized Rats

open access: yesInternational Journal of Biological Sciences, 2011
Diosgenin, a traditional Yam extraction, has been used in hormone replacement for menopausal women. We aimed to investigate the influences of diosgenin administration upon the MMP-2 and -9 activity and expression and reproductive hormones of ...

Switchgrass Steroidal Saponins Reduce Fungal Disease but Decrease Yeast Fermentation Yield

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 18, Issue 1, January 2026.
Yeast fermentation of switchgrass biomass is inhibited for certain genotypes, especially those with high concentrations of steroidal saponins that protect against fungal disease. Inhibition can be reversed through (1) ergosterol addition, (2) fermentation with the bacterium Zymonomas mobilis, or (3) in different collection years.

Molecularly imprinted polymers for diosgenin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Diosgenin is steroid sapogenin used in therapies of many diseases such as breast cancer, cervix cancer, prostate cancer, certain forms of leukemia and in infertility therapy. Diosgenin is a precursor for production of other significant steroidal compounds such as dehydroepiandrosterone [1].
