Transcriptome analysis of Dioscorea zingiberensis identifies genes involved in diosgenin biosynthesis

Genes & Genomics, 2017
Dioscorea zingiberensis is the main plant source of diosgenin, a precursor for the production of steroid hormones used in the pharmaceutical industry. The extraction process of diosgenin from D. zingiberensis can generate high-acid and high-strength wastewater on a large scale and can threaten the environment.

Hormonal effects on diosgenin biosynthesis and growth in Dioscorea deltoidea tissue cultures

Phytochemistry, 1976
Abstract Analysis of Dioscorea deltoidea tissue cultures grown in the presence of 2,4-D, indole-3-butyric acid, isopentenyladenine, benzyladenine and GA singly and in combination showed that the medium with 2,4-D most consistently favored diosgenin production. GA and high benzyladenine concentrations were toxic.

Expression analysis of steroid pathway genes revealed positive correlation with diosgenin biosynthesis in Trillium govanianum

Acta Physiologiae Plantarum, 2016
Trillium govanianum Wall. ex D. Don, popularly known as Nagchhatri, is an important medicinal plant of northwestern Himalayas. No data exist on molecular characteristics of diosgenin biosynthesis, the main chemical component of T. govanianum. HPLC analysis revealed diosgenin content of 2.4 and 0.7% in hydrolyzed rhizome extracts of Chamba and Lahaul ...

Kinetics of cellular growth and diosgenin biosynthesis in Dioscorea caucasica cell suspensions, cultured in batch system

Plant Science, 1992
Abstract By selecting small cell aggregates, several cell lines of Dioscorea with different characteristics were established: colour, size of cell aggregates, growth, accumulation of carotenoids, diosgenin and phytosterols. The white-coloured lines accumulate larger amounts of diosgenin than the unselected cell suspension and the cream-coloured ...

Identification and functional characterization of DzS3GT, a cytoplasmic glycosyltransferase catalyzing biosynthesis of diosgenin 3-O-glucoside in Dioscorea zingiberensis

Plant Cell, Tissue and Organ Culture (PCTOC), 2017
Dioscorea plants produce pharmaceutical diosgenin, which usually exists in plants in the form of saponins and has been a starting material for the production of steroids over seven decades. The first step of steroidal saponin biosynthesis from the corresponding aglycone is glycosylation by 3-O-sterol glycosyltransferase (S3GT), transferring the ...
