Guiding DNA Methylation [PDF]

open access: yesCell Stem Cell, 2011
How DNA methyltransferases, with their limited target specificity, establish cell-type-specific epigenetic patterns is poorly understood. Schübeler and colleagues (Lienert et al., 2011) now show that methylation-determining regions (MDRs) within promoter regions are sufficient to recapitulate endogenous patterns and dynamics of DNA methylation.

Role of genetic and environmental factors in DNA methylation of lipid metabolism

open access: yesGenes and Diseases, 2018
A number of recent studies revealed that DNA methylation plays a central role in the regulation of lipid metabolism. DNA methylation modifications are important regulators of transcriptional networks that do not affect the DNA sequence and can translate ...

Decreased DNA methylation of a CpG site in the HBAP1 gene in plasma DNA from pregnant women. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
OBJECTIVE:The objective of this study is to identify potential CpG site(s) or DNA methylation pattern(s) in the pseudo α-globin 1 gene (HBAP1 gene), the gene which locates in α-thalassemia-1 deletion mutation, to differentiate plasma DNA between pregnant

Parenting stress and DNA methylation among African Americans in the InterGEN Study

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Translational Science, 2017
IntroductionGeneral life stress has been associated with altered DNA methylation in individuals of African Ancestry, although the relationship between parenting stress and DNA methylation has not been described.

The DNA methylome of human sperm is distinct from blood with little evidence for tissue-consistent obesity associations.

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2020
Epidemiological research suggests that paternal obesity may increase the risk of fathering small for gestational age offspring. Studies in non-human mammals indicate that such associations could be mediated by DNA methylation changes in spermatozoa that ...

The Arginine Methyltransferase PRMT6 Regulates DNA Methylation and Contributes to Global DNA Hypomethylation in Cancer

open access: yesCell Reports, 2017
Summary: DNA methylation plays crucial roles in chromatin structure and gene expression. Aberrant DNA methylation patterns, including global hypomethylation and regional hypermethylation, are associated with cancer and implicated in oncogenic events. How

Diversity of Fungal DNA Methyltransferases and Their Association With DNA Methylation Patterns

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) are a group of proteins that catalyze DNA methylation by transferring a methyl group to DNA. The genetic variation in DNMTs results in differential DNA methylation patterns associated with various biological processes.

DNA methylation and cancer [PDF]

open access: yesOncogene, 2002
There is tremendous ferment in the field of epigenetics as the relationships between chromatin structure and DNA methylation patterns become clearer. Central to this activity is the realization that the 'histone code', which involves the post-translational modification of histones and which has important ramifications for chromatin structure, may be ...

Regulated DNA Methylation and the Circadian Clock: Implications in Cancer

open access: yesBiology, 2014
Since the cloning and discovery of DNA methyltransferases (DNMT), there has been a growing interest in DNA methylation, its role as an epigenetic modification, how it is established and removed, along with the implications in development and disease.

VEZF1 elements mediate protection from DNA methylation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
There is growing consensus that genome organization and long-range gene regulation involves partitioning of the genome into domains of distinct epigenetic chromatin states.
