Early grower perceptions and likely acceptance of RNAi‐based biopesticides in Australia

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Individual decisions on the adoption of RNAi‐based biopesticides reflect balance of perceived risks and benefits. Adoption can be facilitated through tailored communication strategies highlighting clear scientific evidence of product efficacy. Abstract BACKGROUND Managing pest resistance while reducing reliance on conventional chemical pesticides ...

Influenza A virus circumvents the innate immune response through the sequestration of double-stranded RNA

open access: yesJournal of Virology
Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), which induces an innate immune response against viral infections, is rarely detected in influenza A virus (IAV)-infected cells.

Oral RNAi reduces survival and grain loss in Rhyzopertha dominica, including phosphine‐resistant populations

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Oral delivery of dsRNA targeting essential genes reduces adult survival and grain damage in Rhyzopertha dominica, including highly phosphine‐resistant populations. These findings support RNAi as a complementary mode‐of‐action for resistance management and postharvest protection in stored‐grain systems. Abstract BACKGROUND Phosphine fumigation remains a

Analysis of Double-Stranded RNA from Microbial Communities Identifies Double-Stranded RNA Virus-like Elements

open access: yesCell Reports, 2014
Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) can function as genetic information and may have served as genomic material before the existence of DNA-based life. By developing a method to purify dsRNA, we have investigated the diversity of dsRNA in microbial populations ...

Silencing of juvenile hormone‐related genes through RNA interference leads to molt failure and high mortality in the spongy moth

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
The feasibility of using RNA interference to control the globally important quarantine pest, the spongy moth. Targeting genes related to JHs play an important role in the growth and development of insects. First, the open reading frames (ORFs) of Ldjhamt and Ldjheh were identified and characterized, and the target genes were cloned and double‐stranded ...

Expanding networks of RNA virus evolution

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2012
In a recent BMC Evolutionary Biology article, Huiquan Liu and colleagues report two new genomes of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) viruses from fungi and use these as a springboard to perform an extensive phylogenomic analysis of dsRNA viruses.

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.
