Candidemia surveillance in Iowa: emergence of echinocandin resistance

Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, 2014
We performed prospective surveillance for candidemia at 14 Iowa hospitals in 2011-2012. A total of 163 episodes were analyzed. Candida albicans (n = 69 [42%]) and Candida glabrata (n = 58 [36%]) were the most common species. Antifungal resistance was uncommon; 9% of C.

Molecular Detection of Resistance to Echinocandins

2016
In the last years, life-threatening fungal diseases have increased significantly, due to the rising number of human individuals susceptible to fungal infections, which are in part complicated by the emergence of antifungal drug-resistant pathogens.

Echinocandin resistance in human pathogenic fungi

Expert Review of Anti-infective Therapy, 2012
Immunocompromised patients are at risk of developing invasive fungal infections that have mortality rates ranging from 30 to 90%.

Exploring the In Vitro Resistance of Candida parapsilosis to Echinocandins

Mycopathologia, 2016
The naturally high minimum inhibitory concentration exhibited by echinocandins against Candida parapsilosis has been known since the first introduction of these antifungal agents. Despite this awareness, clinical failures have not been reported; consequently, the resistance of C. parapsilosis to echinocandins remains unexplored.

Echinocandin-Resistant Candida: Molecular Methods and Phenotypes

Current Fungal Infection Reports, 2011
We now have a decade of experience with echinocandin drugs. Large-scale epidemiologic antifungal surveillance studies have demonstrated that caspofungin, micafungin, and anidulafungin retain high potency on clinical isolates of Candida, and resistance remains relatively low.
