Partial purification of the Acyl-CoA elongase of Allium porrum leaves

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1989
Acyl-CoA elongase has been partially purified from leek (Allium porrum L.) epidermal cells. The microsomal elongase is first solubilized by Triton X-100. The solubilized proteins are then submitted to anion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and, finally, to gel filtration on Ultrogel 34 AcA.

Distinct developmental expression of two elongase family members in zebrafish

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2010
Despite the known importance of long-chained polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) during development, very little is known about their utilization and biosynthesis during embryogenesis. Combining the advantages of the existence of a complete range of enzymes required for LC-PUFA biosynthesis and the well established developmental biology tools in ...

Characterization of fatty acid elongase enzymes from germinating pea seeds

Phytochemistry, 1998
In vitro biosynthesis of radioactive arachidate and behenate was observed when microsomal fractions of germinating pea seeds were incubated with exogenous stearoyl-CoA (18:0-CoA) or arachidoyl-CA (20:0-CoA) in the presence of NADPH, [2-14C]malonyl-CoA and ATP.

Biochemical characterization of elongase activity in corn (Zea mays L.) roots

Phytochemistry, 2005
Chemical analysis of 4-day-old corn (Zea mays L.) root cell walls revealed that the lipophilic biopolymer suberin forms an important constituent of rhizodermal and hypodermal cell walls. Identified aliphatic monomers had chain lengths ranging from C16 to C26 and they belonged to 5 substance classes (omega-hydroxycarboxylic acids, 1,omega-dicarboxylic ...

Acyl-CoA elongase expression during seed development in Brassica napus

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular and Cell Biology of Lipids, 2001
The Bn-FAE1.1 and Bn-FAE1.2 genes encode the 3-ketoacyl-CoA synthase, a component of the elongation complex responsible for the synthesis of very long chain monounsaturated fatty acids (VLCMFA) in the seeds of Brassica napus. Bn-FAE1 gene expression was studied during seed development using two different cultivars: Gaspard, a high erucic acid rapeseed (

The fatty acid elongase gene family in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens

Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2019
The cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) biosynthetic pathways branches off from the synthesis of fatty acids. Fatty acid elongases (ELOs) are enzymes catalyzing the synthesis of long-chain fatty acids and thereby contribute to the diversification of CHCs. Based on bioinformatics analyses we identified 20 ELO genes in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens ...

3D Structure Modeling of a Transmembrane Protein, Fatty Acid Elongase

2010
Fatty acid elongase is an enzyme responsible for fatty acid chain elongation, a key step in synthesis of long chain fatty acids, including polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Currently, the increasing demand has raised the interest in obtaining these PUFAs from alternative sources, e.g. filamentous fungi that are more economical and sustainable.

A fatty acid elongase ELO with novel activity from Dictyostelium discoideum

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2008
Fatty acid elongation was examined in the cellular slime mold, Dictyostelium discoideum. Profiling of the total fatty acid content of D. discoideum indicated that fatty acid elongation is active. Orthologs of the fatty acid elongase ELO family were identified in the D.

Genetic variants of fatty acid elongase 6 in Chinese Holstein cow

Gene, 2018
In the dairy industry, genetic variants have contributed to the improvement of milk production traits. Fatty acid elongase 6 (ELOVL6), which elongates saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), plays a distinct role in the balance of long-chain fatty acids composition in animals.
